Leonardo DiCaprio Shocked: Kids Adore His R-Rated ‘Wolf of Wall Street’!

Leonardo DiCaprio Was Astonished That Kids Love His R-Rated Movie Wolf Of Wall Street

Leonardo DiCaprio was taken aback when he discovered that his mature-themed film The Wolf of Wall Street, filled with explicit content and strong language, has a young fanbase. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film features DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort, a real stockbroker whose corrupt financial activities and extravagant lifestyle eventually lead to his downfall. The cast also includes Margot Robbie in a star-making performance, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, and Jon Bernthal.

The 2013 release of The Wolf of Wall Street garnered five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for DiCaprio. The film earned $407 million globally and remains popular, often referenced in memes and viral videos. Despite its success, DiCaprio expressed astonishment at the number of young fans who adore The Wolf of Wall Street.

During a Variety interview for One Battle After Another, when asked about his films that resonate with younger generations like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, DiCaprio shared:

“Some little kids come up to me and say, ‘I loved Wolf of Wall Street.’ Like, you saw that? How old are you?”

DiCaprio was surprised to learn that many young viewers have watched the film, which includes scenes of him on a disastrous quaalude trip, holds the record for the third-most uses of the F-word in a film, and features extensive debauchery. Nonetheless, the Academy Award-winning actor also confessed, “I watched a lot of R-rated films when I was young.”

Exploring How Young Audiences Access The Wolf Of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street carries an R-rating, which typically requires viewers under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. However, enforcing this rule can be challenging, especially since The Wolf of Wall Street is available on streaming platforms.

Recently, The Wolf of Wall Street was featured on the free streaming service Pluto TV and is currently available on MGM+ and Paramount+. Although many streaming services provide parental controls to manage what children can watch, it’s not uncommon for some to bypass these restrictions.

Reflecting on The Youthful Appeal of The Wolf Of Wall Street

As DiCaprio mentioned, watching films meant for older audiences is nothing new and is somewhat of a tradition. If there is any positive aspect, it’s that with The Wolf of Wall Street, young viewers are experiencing the work of one of the finest filmmakers of our era. It’s encouraging to see young people appreciate and enjoy films that predate them.

However, it was equally surprising for me to hear DiCaprio mention the film’s popularity among young viewers. The Wolf of Wall Street is definitely not a movie I’d recommend for children under high school age. Ideally, younger viewers should be able to discern that Jordan Belfort’s character is not one to be idolized.
