The upcoming film Supergirl is set to introduce a fresh perspective on superheroines within the DC Universe.
Under the direction of Craig Gillespie, the movie features Milly Alcock in the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, who is the last surviving female from Krypton and a cousin to Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet. The cast also includes notable names such as Jason Momoa, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. Previously, Kara was brought to life by Helen Slater in the 1984 film Supergirl and by Sasha Calle in the 2023 movie The Flash.
In a discussion with Screen Rant at CCXP Mexico, Alcock shared insights into her unique take on the character of Supergirl within the DC Universe. She expressed, “Handling Kara as a unique entity was pivotal for me,” highlighting her distinct approach.
Alcock added, “She differs significantly from other female superheroes we’ve seen in the past.” She emphasized that Kara “exudes a genuineness and authenticity” that hasn’t been depicted in previous renditions of the character or in many cinematic female superheroes. The star from House of the Dragon described her as “unpolished, incredibly cool, and somewhat impudent.”
Alcock also reflected on the enduring legacy of Supergirl and her various portrayals over the years in another interview with Screen Rant in 2024. She remarked, “All interpretations of the character are significant due to the ideals she represents.” She noted, “The character of Supergirl has been an icon since the 1950s.”
Supergirl first made her appearance in Action Comics #252 in May 1959.
According to Alcock, “each version of Supergirl is important for young women to witness, and ideally, each portrayal allows someone to see a bit of themselves in her.” Melissa Benoist, who previously played Supergirl on television, has shown support for Alcock stepping into this role. Benoist stated, “Once you wear the symbol, you join a unique group of individuals who have donned capes,” expressing her excitement for new adaptations of the story.
Highlighting a personal aspect of her character, Alcock noted that Kara “isn’t trying to save the entire world—she’s trying to save her own world.” She concluded, “This movie serves as a poignant reminder that even if the world around you is falling apart, you can still be your own hero.”
Supergirl is set to soar into cinemas on June 26, 2026.
