Continued Partnership Between Movistar Plus+ and Sony Pictures Entertainment
Movistar Plus+ and Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) have recently extended their comprehensive agreement for the distribution of film and television series content.
With this renewal, Movistar Plus+ will maintain its status as the exclusive Pay 1 destination in Spain for Sony Pictures’ feature films once they complete their runs in cinemas and home entertainment formats.
The films covered under this agreement include the newly released 28 Years Later, upcoming entries in the series I Know What You Did Last Summer and Karate Kid: Legends, along with titles from established catalogues like Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Men In Black, Bad Boys, Hotel Transylvania, The Da Vinci Code, Equalizer, and classic films such as Little Women, Whiplash, and Call Me by Your Name.
The renewed deal also ensures the continuation of the Sony networks’ AXN channel on Movistar Plus+ as part of its linear TV package, which includes the resurgence of AXN Movies, a channel dedicated to mainstream cinematic hits.
The AXN lineup features popular series like The Good Doctor, Criminal Minds, Chicago Fire, and S.W.A.T. Additionally, the platform hosts a comprehensive library of over 100 series including critically acclaimed Damages and The Shield, as well as exclusive content from Sony Pictures Television like Twisted Metal, High Country, and Accused.
Mark Young, EVP, Distribution & Networks at Sony Pictures Television, expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration. He remarked on the high-quality slate of both feature films and television series that will be available to Spanish audiences following their theatrical releases. Young also noted the strong performance of the AXN networks, which will continue to deliver top-notch programming through this partnership.
The newly appointed CEO of Movistar Plus+, Daniel Domenjó, emphasized the importance of the film component in the renewed agreement. “Our goal is to present the finest cinema offerings in Spain and to premiere major international flicks. Renewing our deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment is a crucial step towards achieving that,” he stated.
This announcement of the renewal came shortly after Domenjó addressed concerns in Spain about the future of original films and television productions on the platform. He committed to preserving Movistar Plus+’s influential role in supporting the local creative industry.
