New Release: “A Friend of Dorothy” Now Streaming on Disney+
The Oscar-contending short film A Friend of Dorothy, produced in the UK and directed by Lee Knight, has recently been made available on Disney+ for viewers in the UK and Europe. This poignant film explores the blossoming friendship between Dorothy, an elderly woman who lives by herself, and JJ, a young teenager from next door.
Star-Studded Cast
The film features BAFTA-winning actress Miriam Margolyes as Dorothy and Alistair Nwachukwu, known for Shadow and Bone, as JJ. Their relationship begins when JJ accidentally kicks his football into Dorothy’s yard. The narrative draws inspiration from a genuine relationship that the director, Knight, shared with his husband and a beloved former neighbor. Notable actors Stephen Fry and Oscar Lloyd also contribute to the rich ensemble of the cast.
A Bond of Support and Dreams
In the movie, JJ becomes a source of support for Dorothy, assisting with challenging chores around the house and keeping her company. Dorothy, whose husband has died and whose son resides overseas, has limited contact with her family except for a self-interested grandson. As JJ steps in as a steadfast companion, Dorothy in turn nurtures his aspirations of becoming a stage actor by engaging him with play readings and performances.
Accolades and Recognition
Lee Knight’s direction in A Friend of Dorothy earned him the Best Director award, and the film itself won Best Drama at the HollyShorts London event. Described as a touching narrative about loneliness, connection, and the serendipity of friendships, the film premiered at Raindance and enjoyed a successful run on the festival circuit. Its debut on Disney+ marks its transition to a broader audience, reaching beyond film festivals.
Upon the film’s recognition, Knight expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am profoundly thankful to the Academy for the shortlist nomination of A Friend of Dorothy in the Best Short Film category. This film highlights the significance of human bonds and being acknowledged, despite our apparent differences. It’s heartwarming to see such narratives of fellowship, acceptance, and genuine existence gain international acclaim.”
Production and Support
In an interview with Deadline in December, Knight detailed the film’s production, which was a collaborative effort under his Filthy Gorgeous Productions, along with A Marlow’s Production, Double Dice Films, and Namesake Films. Producers included James Dean of The Stolen Girl fame, Scottie Fotré, and Max Marlow. The project also received support from executive producers Stephen Daldry and Sonia Friedman.
