The latest installment in James Cameron’s Avatar series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is currently facing stiff competition at movie theaters. Unexpectedly, it is one of four films currently vying for dominance, and their collective performance is breaking new records.
As reported by Variety, Fire and Ash earned $88 million in its opening weekend domestically, which falls short of its predecessor Avatar: The Way of Water’s debut at $134 million. David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research commented on the film’s initial performance:
“The debut weekend isn’t the key focus for ‘Avatar’ films. It’s their performance following the release that historically positions them among the highest-grossing films ever. We’ll need several weeks to truly assess how successful this movie will be.”
While Avatar: Fire and Ash has been a major topic of conversation, it wasn’t the only film making waves. Angel Studios released the animated musical David, and Lionsgate premiered The Housemaid. Additionally, the animated feature The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants made its way back to cinemas.
The family-friendly biblical musical David, which tells the tale of David and Goliath, brought in $22 million, securing the second place on the domestic box office charts. Composed by Joseph Trapanese, the film has earned a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place, the psychological thriller The Housemaid opened with $19 million. The film, directed by Paul Feig and based on the novel by Freida McFadden, stars Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, and Brandon Sklenar, and has been well-received with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants debuted fourth, garnering $16 million, which is the lowest opening among the SpongeBob theatrical releases. However, it has performed well critically, boasting a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
These four films have set a significant milestone as this is the first time in the 2020s that the top four spots at the box office are all occupied by new releases. Even though Avatar: Fire and Ash may not have met expectations, the other three contenders have certainly surpassed them, delighting both audiences and film creators.
