The DC Universe is gearing up for its upcoming major movie release.
After the Supergirl movie this summer, the next feature as part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” series will shine a light on Gotham City. This time, the focus isn’t on Batman but on one of his formidable adversaries.
The forthcoming Clayface film by DC Studios marks the first horror narrative in James Gunn’s series and is rated R. Set to premiere soon, Entertainment Weekly has released new visuals of the anticipated body horror film. Explore the complete image gallery below:
In their feature on Clayface, EW revealed several new details about the film. Importantly, while audiences have yet to see Matt Hagen in his complete monstrous form, it will definitely appear in the movie—with a twist.
The future promotional materials for the movie won’t reveal his ultimate transformation into Clayface—his true, towering appearance with a gaping mouth and deep, hollow eyes will remain a surprise for theatergoers. This confirms that what has been shown in the initial trailer is just a glimpse of his capabilities.
Director James Watkins shared his perspective with EW, citing Steven Spielberg’s approach in Jaws as an inspiration: “You don’t want to show the shark. I think too much is often revealed…I believe in the power of mystery and suggestion and in letting people piece things together. It’s more engaging that way.”
Actor Tom Rhys Harries, who portrays Clayface, expressed his excitement about the project: “It’s been a year since I saw that creature being put together. I can’t wait for audiences to see it. The immense creative effort that goes into producing a movie like this is astounding, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be involved.”
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran also confirmed that the Clayface movie is set before Creature Commandos, and that the version of the shapeshifter seen in the animated series is indeed the one played by Tom Rhys Harries. He confirmed, “Yes, it is the same Clayface.”
Naomi Ackie’s enigmatic character has been revealed as Caitlyn Corr, a new character for the film who is a scientist responsible for giving Matt the transformative serum. This dark element plays a crucial role in his metamorphosis into the notorious DC villain. Max Minghella will portray John Pearlman, a detective from Gotham PD and another new character created for the film.
Describing Clayface as “a true body horror akin to a Cronenberg film,” Safran emphasized, “We’re not just telling a villain story, but unfolding a profound psychological drama.” What lies ahead for Matt in his solo journey post-2026 is yet to be unveiled.
With Clayface being one of the notable horror releases of 2026, it remains to be seen how this DCU entry will perform at the box office and integrate within the broader comic book universe. As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to another trailer that will hopefully provide further insights into the story.
