Backlash Resurfaces with the Release of Scream 7 Trailer
Almost two years following the termination of Melissa Barrera from the popular franchise, the debut trailer for Scream 7 has stirred up renewed controversy.
The iconic horror series, initiated by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson in 1996, faced immediate criticism from fans on social platforms after the trailer’s release. This response came in the wake of Spyglass Media parting ways with Barrera due to her remarks concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict and the reported “atrocities against Palestinians.” Jenna Ortega also departed from the series shortly thereafter.
A fan expressed disappointment on X, pointing out the absence of two crucial female characters in the trailer.
Another declared the series over for them with a snapshot from the last scene of Scream VI, signaling their discontent.
The decision to fire Barrera led one viewer to assert their refusal to support the upcoming film, directly linking their stance to the actions taken against the actress.
Fan Reactions on Social Media
Amid a variety of reactions, some users on Twitter highlighted their discontent by advocating for a boycott of Scream 7 and instead supporting other projects like Scary Movie 6, a direct spoof originating from the original Scream.
Support for Barrera’s other works was a common theme among the responses. One user mentioned, “Anyways YOUR MONSTER (2024) starring Melissa Barrera is streaming on HBO Max and Hulu,” promoting her other film projects.
Another reminder shared on Twitter was for the upcoming release of The Copenhagen Test, which features Barrera alongside Simu Liu, set to premiere on December 27th.
Moreover, the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement has started a grassroots campaign against the sequel, which has been joined by 22 arts and advocacy groups.
The call for a boycott of Scream 7 was prompted by Spyglass Media’s termination of Barrera in November 2023, after which they cited a strict policy against antisemitism and hate incitement.
Shifts Within the Franchise
Following Barrera’s controversial exit, Ortega also left the project, later noting that the sequel seemed to be unraveling without Barrera, who was slated to be the new ‘final girl’ Sam Carpenter.
Scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, Scream 7 is set to feature a mix of returning and new actors. Veterans like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Scott Foley, Matthew Lillard, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding are joined by newcomers such as Joel McHale, Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.
The series continues, despite the controversies and shifts in its cast, aiming to capture both new audiences and longtime fans of the franchise.
