In the newly released trailer for Screamboat, a murderous parody of Mickey Mouse wreaks havoc on a group of characters resembling Disney princesses. Produced by the team behind Terrifier 2 and 3, this forthcoming film presents a twisted version of the iconic Disney character, now portrayed by David Howard Thornton from Terrifier. Director Steven LaMorte has taken the now-public domain Steamboat Willie and turned it into a horrific narrative set on a ferry in New York City. Screamboat is scheduled for a theater release on April 2.
The latest trailer for Screamboat has just been unveiled (as reported by Variety). It features a typeface reminiscent of Disney and a voice-over that chillingly mimics the tone of traditional Disney trailers. The trailer introduces characters Cindi, Bella, Jazzy, Arianna, and Rory, each bearing a slight resemblance to famous Disney princesses. They embark on the Staten Island Ferry for an evening of revelry, with Cindi announcing, “Let’s get this jungle cruise going!” However, their lighthearted outing quickly descends into horror.
The Implications for Screamboat
The Continued Terror of Mascot Horror
With Steamboat Willie set to enter the public domain in 2024, the race is on to transform Disney’s original mascot into a figure of terror. Screamboat is part of a growing trend of “mascot horror,” joining titles like I Heart Willie and The Mouse Trap. This genre has been gaining popularity thanks to the “Poohniverse” series, which includes the anticipated Bambi: The Reckoning. LaMorte, who directed the viral horror hit The Mean One, a parody of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, is familiar with this genre.
Armed with a harpoon splattered with blood, the Steamboat Willie character is seen laughing wickedly as he chases down each victim on the ferry. His once cheerful whistle now serves as a haunting backdrop to the unfolding slaughter. Portrayed by Thornton, this murderous version of Mickey Mouse faces a cast of notable talents including Allison Pittel, Amy Schumacher, and others, with cameo appearances by Tyler Posey and others.
Our Perspective on the Latest Screamboat Trailer
Even a Killer Mouse Can’t Redeem a Clichéd Slasher
While the mascot horror genre is just emerging, its early entries have struggled to impress. LaMorte’s The Mean One garnered only a 23% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Mouse Trap scoring even lower. Although Screamboat leverages the unique concept of a homicidal Steamboat Willie, it risks the same shortcomings seen in previous parody slashers that did not resonate with audiences.
Despite Thornton’s chilling portrayal of a public domain Mickey Mouse, echoing his role as Art the Clown in Terrifier, the film seems to lack originality. The formula of attractive yet shallow women falling prey to a killer has been overused, and Screamboat appears to rely heavily on this worn trope. Screamboat may not have a high bar to meet, yet it still faces an uphill battle to distinguish itself.
