The film Doomsday promises an exciting blend of characters, featuring both beloved MCU heroes and members of the X-Men from Fox’s previous films. Among them, Simu Liu returns as Shang-Chi, a role he first embodied in 2021. Despite this being only his second appearance, Liu revealed to Comicbook.com that fans can expect a more mature and assured version of his character.
“He’s older,” said Liu. “I’m older, so it’s wonderful to portray him with more self-assurance, particularly because Shang was initially quite out of his element. There’s been a time leap, so we’ll see him more comfortable in his skin and his duties.“
Details regarding Shang-Chi’s involvement in Doomsday remain under wraps. However, following Liu’s comments and a pivotal crossover moment in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it seems likely that he will play a significant role as an Avenger. Intriguingly, Liu hinted at interactions with the X-Men characters, keeping fans eagerly speculating.
“Receiving that call, then finding out who would be attending, some of whom I’d met and others not yet, was thrilling. Each of them is a legend, like Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart—actors I’ve admired since childhood. It’s surreal to think I might share scenes with them.” Liu expressed, careful to maintain secrecy yet clearly excited about the ensemble.
Liu also touched on the challenges of navigating Marvel’s intensive promotional campaigns and the importance of avoiding spoilers. “You never know when a casual comment might turn into a viral soundbite,” he mentioned, recalling a time when he mentioned a new suit for Shang-Chi, which then sparked widespread media frenzy.
“I am very cautious about what I say now,” Liu concluded. Despite the secrecy, anticipation for Doomsday continues to grow, fueled by teasers that hint at the return of X-Men, Thor, Captain America, and other heroes.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
