The horror film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Michael B. Jordan in a compelling dual role as twins Smoke and Stack, has achieved another significant box office success. Upon returning to their hometown in Mississippi in 1932, the twins face a terrifying evil. The movie has broken several records, including the largest Easter weekend opening for an R-rated film. It has now grossed over $300 million globally, ranking it among the top ten highest-earning horror films of all time. It is scheduled to be released on various video on demand platforms starting June 3.
According to Warner Bros., Sinners surpassed the $250 million mark domestically, with a Friday revenue of $2.4 million raising its total to $250.2 million. It’s the second film to reach this figure in 2025, following A Minecraft Movie, which has earned $418.6 million in North America. By the end of the Memorial Day weekend, it is expected to exceed The Hangover Part II ($254.5 million) and become the 11th highest-grossing R-rated movie in domestic box office history.
Implications for Sinners
A Major Triumph for Original Horror
Since its premiere in April, the box office performance of Sinners has continued to soar. It became the 157th film to cross the $250 million mark domestically and ranks as the third highest-earning horror film in the same category. It only follows the iconic 1975 movie Jaws ($273.7 million) and the 2017 hit It ($328.8 million). Notably, both of these films were adaptations of books, making Sinners the top-grossing original horror film in North America.
Jaws was adapted from Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel, and It from Stephen King’s 1986 book.
To achieve this status, Sinners outperformed other domestic successes like John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place ($188 million), Jordan Peele’s Get Out ($175.8 million) and Us ($175.1 million), and the found footage hit The Blair Witch Project ($140.5 million). It has also done exceptionally well outside its genre, with only 25 other films surpassing the $250 million domestic mark in the 2020s, ranging from 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King at $254.6 million to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home at $814.9 million.
Our Perspective on the Sinners Milestone
Nothing More to Prove
Considering that the film is in its sixth weekend and soon to be available on VOD, it is expected that its domestic box office earnings will soon decline, preventing further ascension in the rankings. With a production budget of $90 million, Sinners has already surpassed its estimated break-even point of $225 million at the domestic box office alone, thus solidifying its place as a historic success without anything more to prove.
