Paramount Global Expands Its Crime Drama Portfolio
Paramount Global has recently secured the rights to a new captivating crime drama from Peacock titled M.I.A. This show, crafted by Bill Dubuque of Ozark fame and produced by MRC, features lead actress Shannon Gisela. Over the next few days, this series will be showcased to potential buyers.
The Paramount Global Content Distribution’s acquisition includes the show M.I.A. along with others like Boston Blue and Sheriff County, which were also highlighted in last week’s Upfront selections. These shows will be presented on the Paramount lot, drawing the attention of numerous acquisition executives.
About M.I.A.
M.I.A. is set to reach an international audience following a direct-to-series order from Peacock last year. The plot centers around Etta Tiger Jonze (portrayed by Shannon), for whom drug trafficking is a family enterprise. The stakes are high as she finds herself suddenly at the helm of the family business, facing unprecedented challenges that push her into the depths of Miami’s crime scene.
The cast of M.I.A. also includes notable actors such as Dylan Jackson, Brittany Adebumola, Cary Elwes, Alberto Guerra, Gerardo Celasco, Maurice Compte, Marta Milans, and Danay Garcia, adding depth and diversity to the storyline.
Bill Dubuque, recognized for his role in creating the hit Netflix series Ozark alongside Mark Williams, serves as the creator and executive producer of M.I.A. The showrunner and executive producer role is held by Karen Campbell. Additionally, Alethea Jones directs the first two episodes and contributes as an executive producer.
Dubuque revisits themes of familial involvement in illicit activities, a common thread seen in his previous work with Ozark. Mark Williams’ most recent project, Safe Harbor—a drama revolving around drug smuggling in Europe—was introduced last year at MIPCOM and showcased at the London TV Screenings via Eccho Rights.
Paramount and MRC have a history of collaboration, having previously partnered on the international distribution for series such as The Great and Poker Face.
