‘Las Malas’: Karla Sofía Gascón Joined In Armando Bo Film By Adela Buendía, Daniela Vega, Louta, Lola Rodríguez, Yenesi, Luis Machín & More

EXCLUSIVE: The highly anticipated film adaptation of Camila Sosa Villada’s acclaimed novel Las Malas, by Oscar-winning scriptwriter Armando Bo (Birdman), is scheduled to start shooting next month in Córdoba, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay.

The cast of this Spanish-language movie features the previously announced Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Perez). The narrative is set in Córdoba and revolves around a group of transgender sex workers. These workers, led by the indomitable Auntie Encarna (played by Gascón), find their precarious sanctuary disrupted after they take in an abandoned infant. What initially appears as a simple act of compassion quickly evolves into a complex tale of desire, peril, resilience, and community solidarity. Bo is both the writer and director of the film.

New talent Adela Buendía has been selected to portray Camila, whose coming-of-age story is central to the narrative. Buendía was chosen after a thorough and broad casting call.

The film also stars Daniela Vega, who won an Oscar for A Fantastic Woman; Argentine artist and performer Louta; Lola Rodríguez, known for her roles in Veneno and Vestidas de Azul; Spanish actress and influencer Yenesi Suarez; and the stage and screen actor Luis Machín. Additionally, Payuca, Romina Escobar, Daniela Ruiz, and Lola Guerreiro will be part of the ensemble cast.

Adding to the production’s prestige, Oscar-nominated producer Vincent Landay (Her) of Landay Entertainment has joined the project. The production team also includes Bo’s About Entertainment, Infinity Hill (known for the Oscar-nominated Argentina, 1985), and Suma Content from Spain, managed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, recognized for their work on Veneno, La Mesías, and La Bola Negra.

The producers of the film are Bo, Ambrossi, Calvo, Natacha Cervi, Mercedes Reincke, Ezequiel Olemberg, Axel Kuschevatzky, Cindy Teperman, Vincent Landay, and Camila Sosa Villada herself.

Bo commented on the casting, “This group of actors combines internationally celebrated artists with fresh, emerging talents, along with performers who share a profound connection with the communities depicted in the film. They bring to Las Malas a blend of authenticity, danger, warmth, and dynamic cinematic quality that truly honors the essence of the original story.”
