The Sands International Film Festival in St Andrews, Scotland, will kick off on April 25 with the premiere of the British independent comedy The Ballad of Wallis Island, featuring performances by Carey Mulligan and Sian Clifford (Fleabag).
The film joins the lineup at Sands following its initial unveiling at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It tells the tale of a lottery winner who hires his admired folk music duo to play a reunion concert on his secluded island. The movie is set for public release by Focus on March 28.
Running through April 27, the festival will also showcase the Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land, which explores an extraordinary bond between a Palestinian filmmaker and an Israeli journalist. Additionally, the documentary Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other will be shown, delving into the lives of a married couple facing the realities of aging. Manon Ouimet, co-director and producer of the film, will partake in a Q&A session post-screening.
Among other notable films at Sands 2025 are Witches, directed and written by Elizabeth Sankey. Sankey will join a Q&A session with the film’s composer and producer, Jeremy Warmsley. Another highlight is Shiori Ito’s Oscar-nominated Black Box Diaries, investigating a woman’s struggle against Japan’s archaic judicial system.
Prominent figures set to attend include the esteemed actress and activist Joanna Lumley, who will engage in a Q&A on the festival’s second day. Additionally, festival founders Joe and Anthony Russo, alongside AGBO CCO Angela Russo-Otstot, will discuss the influence of mentorship with Caribbean filmmaker Frank E. Flowers during a session titled Holding the Door Open.
In other events, musician Kathleen Wallfisch will discuss her career, including her role as Music Supervisor for Ridley Scott’s upcoming films Gladiator II and Napoleon. Prominent Casting Director Kharmel Cochrane will also share insights into her career, with credits including Rye Lane, Saltburn, and The Northman.
Now in its fourth installment, Sands Festival Director Ania Trzebiatowska emphasizes the festival as a hub for “fostering connection and strengthening community.”
“In these complex times, the power of empathy elicited by films is more essential than ever. Our boutique film festival in St Andrews is driven by a commitment to deepen in meaning rather than expand in size,” said Trzebiatowska. “Sands serves as both a beacon for emerging talent and a gathering place for those passionate about discussing and connecting over cinema.”
AGBO Chief Creative Officer Angela Russo-Otstot also remarked, “Sands is dedicated to celebrating bold narratives and building significant creative connections. This year’s lineup underscores our commitment to elevating diverse voices and supporting artists who dare to inspire, challenge, and innovate. We are thrilled to include Frank E. Flowers in our discussions, spotlighting the crucial role of mentorship in nurturing future cinema talent.”
