Alex Garland has established himself as a distinguished director and screenwriter in the film industry. He began his career as a screenwriter, notably crafting the script for the influential zombie horror movie 28 Days Later. His talent for creating captivating narratives continued with films like Sunshine, Dredd, and Never Let Me Go, all of which received positive reviews. This year, Garland is back collaborating with Danny Boyle on the script for the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy, with the first film set to release this summer.
It was not until 2015 that Garland ventured into directing, making his debut with the science fiction thriller Ex-Machina. This film demonstrated his directorial prowess through its stylish and intricate portrayal of an android with ulterior motives. Although he has directed only a handful of films, most have garnered acclaim from critics and moviegoers over the past decade. His recent film, Civil War, became the second highest-grossing movie for A24. Now, his latest collaboration with A24 has achieved a new milestone on Rotten Tomatoes.
Warfare Becomes Garland’s Highest-Rated Movie With Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes
Both Critics & Audiences Agree That Warfare Is A Chilling Depiction Of A Real-Life Story
The first film Garland has released in 2025, Warfare, has set a record on Rotten Tomatoes. This war movie depicts the true story of a group of American Navy SEALs facing a dire situation in Iraq after their surveillance mission fails. With enemies on their trail and injuries among them, they must pull together to survive and escape the deadly conflict. Garland co-wrote this gripping tale with Ray Mendoza, who experienced the perilous mission firsthand in 2006.
The Rotten Tomatoes audience score for Warfare currently stands at 93%, based on over 250 reviews. If this rating holds, it will surpass all of Garland’s previous films in terms of audience scores, with Ex-Machina previously leading at 86%. Critics have also highly rated Warfare, with an impressive score of 95% from 111 reviews. ScreenRant‘s Marry Kessell rated the war film 7 out of 10 stars, commending its intense narrative and execution.
Our Take On Garland’s Latest Rotten Tomatoes Record
It’s An Excellent Visual About Survival & Brotherhood
The success of Warfare is hardly surprising, given the extensive preparation and bonding experienced by the cast during their boot camp training. This preparation has translated into authentic on-screen brotherhood amidst the backdrop of intense warfare, enhancing the film’s impact.
While Warfare may not be my personal favorite among Garland’s works, it is undoubtedly a noteworthy addition to his filmography. Having followed his career from Dredd to Ex-Machina, and appreciating all but one of his films, Garland remains one of my top screenwriters. His next project, which he is writing, is eagerly anticipated and expected to premiere in just a few months.
