The upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter is set to bring the legendary Star Wars series back to its original essence, reminiscent of the 1970s era.
Under the direction of Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, and scripted by Jonathan Tropper, Star Wars: Starfighter introduces Ryan Gosling to the space saga. He is joined by a stellar cast including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Daniel Ings, and Jamael Westman.
While Star Wars: Starfighter is not set to premiere until May 2027, Tropper provided some insights in an interview with The Playlist about what fans can expect from this new chapter. He highlighted that the film would be closely aligned with the feel and tone of the original 1977 Star Wars, diverging from the direction taken by its many sequels and prequels.
Both Tropper and Levy, who were children when George Lucas first launched the Star Wars series, aim to recapture the magical, adventurous spirit of discovering new worlds that captivated them in their youth. This nostalgic vision plays a crucial role in the film’s development.
Tropper emphasized the film’s accessibility, stating that it is designed to welcome a broad audience, including those unfamiliar with the franchise’s previous films. He assured, “There are no barriers to entry. You don’t have to have seen other Star Wars movies to step into this one.”
“The initial vision when Shawn and I began this project was to recreate the enchantment of experiencing ‘Star Wars’ in 1977. We were keen to evoke that thrilling sense of embarking on an adventure into unknown realms. Making this experience accessible to all was paramount. You don’t need any prior knowledge of the movies to enjoy this one.”
This represents a significant shift for the franchise. The latest release before this, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which appeared in theaters in May of the current year and only grossed $344.8 million, presumed that viewers were familiar with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
Unlike previous entries which were closely tied to the original trilogy, such as Rogue One, which is a precursor to A New Hope, and Solo, which explores younger versions of characters like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, Starfighter stands alone. This is a contrast to several Disney+ series like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, and Ahsoka, which are interconnected with existing films or series.
In a time where cinematic universes like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have become highly interlinked, requiring viewers to keep up with every new release, Tropper aims for Starfighter to offer a fresh entry point into the renowned series without the need for background knowledge.
Tropper, who has previously collaborated with Levy on projects such as This is Where I Leave You, Kodachrome, and The Adam Project, expressed confidence in Levy’s direction for Star Wars: Starfighter. He praised both the director and lead actor Ryan Gosling, expressing eager anticipation for the film’s release.
“I believe Shawn has done a remarkable job. Gosling is fantastic. The wait until this film’s release is going to feel very long because I’m extremely excited for people to see it.”
Beyond his collaborations with Levy, Tropper has also created the new Apple TV series Lucky, in addition to Banshee, Warrior, and Your Friends & Neighbors. He has penned scripts for The Wrecking Crew and Matchbox: The Movie.
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled for a theatrical release on Friday, May 28, 2027.
