Studiocanal Opens Theater Label As ‘Paddington: The Musical’ Launches In The West End

Studiocanal Introduces New Theater Division Amidst ‘Paddington: The Musical’ Premiere

As ‘Paddington: The Musical’ makes its debut on the West End, Studiocanal has announced the launch of a new theater-focused division. This initiative, named Studiocanal on Stage, will be spearheaded by Ron Halpern, the EVP Global Productions.

The newly established label by the French film studio will primarily leverage its vast repository of intellectual properties. With over 9,400 film titles from 60 countries, encompassing a century of cinema, the label aims at harnessing these assets for theatrical productions.

The unveiling of Studiocanal on Stage coincides with the premiere of ‘Paddington: The Musical’ at the Savoy Theatre, which began its preview shows earlier this month. The stage adaptation follows the success of the Paddington film series and is expected to be one of the West End’s major theatrical events this year, running until May. The production has already gained significant attention, highlighted by a notable moment when Prince William and Kate Middleton met the iconic bear at the Royal Variety Performance.

Current and Upcoming Productions Under Studiocanal on Stage

In addition to ‘Paddington: The Musical’, Studiocanal’s theatrical rendition of ‘The Producers’ at the Garrick Theatre has recently had its run extended through the next September. The portfolio also includes a variety of other shows such as the Scottish tour of ‘Restless Natives’, ‘Summer Holiday’ at the Sheffield Crucible, and ‘A Boy Called Christmas’, which will be performed by the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre.

Anna Marsh, the head of Studiocanal, articulated that the new stage division is a strategic expansion aimed at broadening the adaptation of their IP across various formats. “With the addition of Studiocanal Stories and Sixth Dimension, our new label provides a structured platform to enhance our catalogue and expose our narratives to new audiences,” she explained. Studiocanal Stories focuses on adapting literary works, while Sixth Dimension is geared towards horror genre productions.
