The eagerly anticipated Zootopia 2 has quickly become a phenomenal success, amassing impressive box office numbers globally within just five days of its release. This sequel to the 2016 Disney blockbuster, which itself grossed over a billion dollars, sees the return of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman as the voice actors for the beloved characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, respectively. They are joined by a star-studded supporting cast that includes Ke Huy Quan, Andy Samberg, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk.
According to a report from Variety, by Sunday morning, Zootopia 2 is expected to have garnered an astounding $556 million globally, securing its place as the fifth highest global debut ever. Remarkably, it has already eclipsed the total earnings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which stood at $521.8 million, making it the tenth highest-grossing film of 2025.
The impressive global earnings include a domestic total of $156 million over the Thanksgiving weekend, complemented by $400 million from international markets. Notably, over half of the international figure, or $272 million, comes from China alone.
These earnings translate to approximately 1.924 billion Chinese yuan, positioning Zootopia 2 as the seventh highest-grossing Hollywood film ever in China, achieved within just days of release. It trails only behind other blockbuster hits like Transformers: Age of Extinction (1.977 yuan) and Avengers: Endgame (4.250 yuan), the latter being the second highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
In recent years, the Chinese market has posed significant challenges for Hollywood films, with many major releases failing to secure distribution in the region. However, Zootopia 2 has managed to captivate the same audiences that propelled the domestic animated sensation Ne Zha 2 to record-breaking heights earlier in the year. Ne Zha 2 not only became the first film to surpass the $1 billion mark in a single region but also became the highest-grossing animated movie ever, surpassing Inside Out 2 (2024) with a global take of $1.902 billion.
While Zootopia 2 may not be on track to break the record set by Ne Zha 2, its strong performance in China has significantly boosted its standing among the highest-earning animated films globally, landing it in the 49th spot. It has outperformed major titles such as Puss in Boots ($555 million) and Kung Fu Panda 4 ($547.7 million).
Given the massive global earnings far surpassing its reported production budget of $150 million, it’s highly probable that the hinted sequel at the end of Zootopia 2 will receive the green light much sooner than expected. With the film’s break-even point estimated to be around $375 million, it is likely already profitable, just a week into its theatrical run.
