Sydney Sweeney Achieves New Box Office Milestone
Sydney Sweeney has recently secured a new box office achievement.
The prominent actress from Euphoria has rapidly become a sought-after talent in Hollywood, especially after her significant role in Anyone But You, which grossed $218.9 million. Following this success, Sweeney took on more film projects, and in 2025, she starred in five different movies. The most successful of these was the thriller based on Freida McFadden’s novel, The Housemaid.
Lionsgate announced that The Housemaid is estimated to reach about $383 million in global box office revenue after nearly two months in theaters. This makes it the highest-grossing film ever in Sweeney’s career, surpassing the earnings of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which had a worldwide gross of over $377 million during its initial release.
However, it should be noted that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood garnered an additional $16 million during its 2024 re-release, bringing its total to $393 million, according to Box Office Mojo. This record pertains only to initial releases and does not take into account earnings from re-releases.
The Significance of This Box Office Record
There are several key factors that make this box office record particularly significant. For one, Sweeney had a minor role in Quentin Tarantino’s film as “Snake,” a member of the Manson family, whereas she played the main character, Millie Calloway, in The Housemaid. Additionally, this achievement represents a significant box office comeback for Sweeney, given the challenges she faced with her 2025 film lineup. While Echo Valley was released directly on Apple TV, her other films Americana, Eden, and Christy did not perform well theatrically, with Christy notably suffering the worst second-weekend drop in history at 92%.
During this period, Sweeney also faced public scrutiny over her involvement in the American Eagle Great Jeans ads. Initially dismissing the criticism, she later addressed it more directly, stating, “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.” This controversy made her a polarizing figure among audiences.
Despite a challenging year with several box office disappointments, The Housemaid marked a significant turnaround, debuting in third place during its opening weekend—despite competing against James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. The thriller then maintained strong performance, dropping only 19.5% in its second weekend, buoyed by positive word-of-mouth.
The film received generally favorable reviews, with critics highlighting the cast’s performance, the pivotal twist, and its homage to erotic thrillers of the 1980s and 1990s. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 74%, while it earned a 92% on the Popcornmeter, the second-highest rating for a Sweeney film.
The success of The Housemaid not only recovered its $35 million budget but also led Lionsgate to confirm a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret, with both Sweeney and director Paul Feig set to return. Production is expected to begin in 2026, though a release date has yet to be announced.
In the meantime, Sweeney is set to reprise her role as Cassie Howard in season 3 of Euphoria, premiering April 12, 2026, on HBO Max. She is also involved in pre-production for several other projects, including Scandalous and Custom of the Country, and a live-action Gundam movie by Netflix is currently casting.
