Sydney Sweeney’s New Movie Scores Big With Fans: Critics Divided Despite Near-Perfect Rating!

New Sydney Sweeney Movie Debuts To Near-Perfect Audience Rotten Tomatoes Score Despite Dividing Critics

Sydney Sweeney’s recent film releases have unfortunately not performed well at the box office, with her latest projects, Eden, Americana, and now Christy, all underperforming. Nevertheless, those who have watched the biographical drama about Christy Martin, directed by David Michôd and featuring a cast that includes Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian, have generally received it positively.

The movie Christy chronicles the early career of the pioneering female boxer, especially highlighting her tumultuous relationship with her former coach and husband. Initially, it garnered a respectable Rotten Tomatoes score of 70% (which has slightly decreased to 67%). Despite this, the lukewarm reception has somewhat sidelined Christy and Sweeney from major awards discussions, due to its straightforward narrative style and the selection of story aspects it focuses on.

Even with a less favorable critique from ScreenRant, the sports drama has secured a 99% Popcornmeter rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Christy hit theaters recently on November 7, drawing more viewers to form opinions on its quality. The film experienced an unexpectedly high turn-out, making its nearly perfect audience rating even more noteworthy.

The debut weekend of Christy saw a global box office collection of just $1.3 million, marking it as the third consecutive film for the Euphoria actress to open below $2 million. Despite a busy year for Sweeney, this string of underperforming films might pose a risk to her future career prospects, contrary to expectations that these releases would solidify her celebrity status.

However, after facing similar criticism and box office disappointment, Eden found success digitally. The historical thriller, also starring Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, managed to attract a significant home audience, although it didn’t perform well theatrically. This digital success, coupled with the audience’s positive reaction to Christy, suggests that Sweeney remains a favored actress.

Over the past few years, Sweeney has enjoyed several successful projects, most notably the romantic comedy Anyone But You and the critically acclaimed horror film Immaculate. While Christy may not be harshly criticized, its shortcomings might hinder it from becoming the breakthrough Sweeney’s team might have hoped for.

Yet for many viewers, Christy presents a compelling and significant story featuring a beloved and talented lead actress, adding a valuable contribution to the sports biopic genre. Sweeney has several more projects lined up, including the thriller The Housemaid releasing in December, marking her busiest year to date. Despite the challenges faced by Christy, having at least one successful film will likely ensure it’s viewed as a notable addition to her body of work.
