X-Men Reboot in MCU: Emmy Winner with Hit Show to Pen New Script!

MCU's X-Men Movie Gets New Script From Creator Of 98% RT Score Emmy-Winning TV Show

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to reintroduce mutants in a fresh cinematic reboot, and the project’s creative roster has recently been bolstered.

In a recent discussion with Collider, Jake Schreier, who commenced his MCU journey with the 2025 release of Thunderbolts, shared updates on his upcoming X-Men movie for Marvel Studios. Michael Lesslie was originally tasked with the screenplay; however, Schreier has confirmed a rewrite is underway. The new script is being crafted by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and Thunderbolts writer Joanna Calo. Schreier expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re still in the development phase. It’s thrilling that both Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] are collaborating, considering their joint efforts on Beef’s current season. Sonny created Beef, and Joanna also contributed this season. We all previously worked together on the first season of Beef and on Thunderbolts.”

Both Calo and Jin are instrumental in the revival of the X-Men within the MCU timeline. Schreier added, “They are currently drafting a new version, which is exciting because it brings our collaborative team back together.” Schreier was pinpointed as the prime candidate to direct the reboot shortly after the debut of Thunderbolts in cinemas, a Phase 5 film that was critically acclaimed. Despite its modest box office performance, the character-driven approach in Schreier’s film secured his position as the director for the X-Men by July 2025.

The MCU has strategically utilized elements of the Multiverse Saga to pave the way for its upcoming mutant era, introducing characters such as Ms. Marvel and Namor early on. While the Fox-Marvel X-Men era has been acknowledged in recent phases, these characters will have a final opportunity to shine in December with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, the second-to-last film of Phase 6.

As of now, the X-Men film lacks a confirmed filming start date, particularly as Marvel Studios gears up to begin production on Avengers: Secret Wars, which concludes both Phase 6 and the entire Multiverse Saga. It is anticipated that the iconic group will prominently feature in Phase 7, which is rumored to be centered around the Mutant Saga.

There’s significant buzz around the potential setup for the X-Men’s introduction into the MCU, particularly through Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is rumored to feature Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. The Stranger Things actress is speculated to continue this role into Avengers: Secret Wars, with further rumors suggesting Jean could be a pivotal figure in the upcoming Marvel saga.

If script development concludes successfully within the year, casting might follow by 2026, aiming for a production start by 2027. With several untitled projects slated by Marvel, the X-Men film could potentially premiere in 2028.

As of yet, Marvel Studios’ X-Men does not have an official release date.
