Monkey Takes the Lead in Tight Race for Second Place
Originally penned on Saturday morning, this article has been refreshed on Sunday morning with the latest figures for box office earnings (highlighted in bold). Please see below for a detailed chart and further commentary.
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to dominate the U.S. box office, securing the top spot once more. It opened as the second-highest debut among the trilogy of Avatar films and has maintained its lead over the following weekends, despite facing stiff competition from holiday blockbusters like Marty Supreme and Anaconda.
According to Variety, by Sunday morning, Avatar: Fire and Ash is predicted to rake in a three-day total of $21.3 million by the close of its fourth weekend, comfortably securing the top position for the fourth consecutive week.
Like its predecessors from 2009 and 2022, the 2025 release of Avatar: Fire and Ash has enjoyed a prolonged stay at the number one spot, leading the domestic box office for seven straight weekends.
Fire and Ash has achieved this despite the release of two significant new films, marking the first major openings of 2026 — Paramount’s thrilling new entry Primate, and the Gerard Butler-led sequel Greenland 2: Migration.
Primate has emerged as the frontrunner among the newcomers, expected to pull in around $11.3 million. It’s currently engaged in a tight race for second place with the Sydney Sweeney-led thriller The Housemaid ($11.1 million), while Disney’s blockbuster Zootopia 2 ($10.1 million) has slipped to fourth place.
Greenland 2 lags behind with an estimated debut of $8 million. Despite its substantial $90 million production budget, Lionsgate’s acquisition of the domestic distribution rights for just $10 million suggests expectations were set for a modest box office performance.
The original Greenland faced a disrupted theatrical release in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which may mean its primary audience will be those watching at home on VOD, streaming, or television.
While neither Greenland 2 nor Primate could surpass Avatar: Fire and Ash, it remains uncertain if the upcoming horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, scheduled for next weekend, will end the reign of James Cameron’s latest. The previous film in the series debuted to $30 million domestically in 2025, hinting at a strong potential opening for the sequel.

Although none of the new releases clinched the top spot this weekend, two made it into the Top 5, displacing a couple of earlier hits.
The comedic reboot Anaconda saw a 49% drop, moving from fifth to seventh place, while the Timothée Chalamet-led Marty Supreme fell from fourth to sixth. The latter could potentially bounce back next weekend, particularly if it secures any of its three Golden Globe nominations.
Should Avatar: Fire and Ash face a challenge in its fifth weekend from The Bone Temple, particularly if the horror sequel experiences a typical second-week drop-off, Cameron’s film might rebound to number one in its sixth weekend. The other new releases that weekend, Mercy and Return to Silent Hill, are expected to have a less significant impact than the 28 Years Later sequel.
