Jafar Panahi, alongside his lawyers, is set to launch an appeal on January 4 against the one-year imprisonment and subsequent two-year travel restriction imposed by the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court.
On the social media platform X, Panahi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced, “We have filed an appeal against the one-year prison sentence awarded to Mr. Jafar Panahi for his alleged anti-regime propaganda activities. The hearing, scheduled by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, will take place on January 4, 2026.”
It remains uncertain if Panahi, who is currently engaged in the awards circuit for his film It Was Just An Accident, which won the Cannes Palme d’Or, will attend the appeal hearing.
Panahi was sentenced in absentia in early December 2025 for engaging in “propaganda activities against the system.”
The Iranian filmmaker has been a longstanding target for the conservative Islamic Republic authorities in Iran.
His most recent arrest occurred in July 2023, when he was detained after visiting the notorious Evin prison to inquire about the status of his colleagues, filmmakers Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Al-Ahmad, who were arrested just days before.
Shortly after his arrest, Iranian officials opted to enforce a previously issued six-year prison term from 2010, which also included a 20-year ban on filmmaking and travel.
His legal troubles stem from his presence at the funeral of a student killed during the 2009 Green Revolution and his subsequent attempt to produce a film about the uprising.
Panahi was released from his most recent prison term in February 2023 after he initiated a hunger strike.
In May 2025, Panahi returned to the Cannes Film Festival after 15 years with his secretly filmed movie, It Was Just An Accident, which claimed the prestigious Palme d’Or.
It Was Just An Accident has been chosen as France’s submission for the 2026 Oscars.
