Cinema Guild Snags Restored Classics: Dive Into French New Wave Master Luc Moullet’s Genius!

Cinema Guild Acquires Restored Films Of French New Wave Master Luc Moullet

Cinema Guild Secures Rights for Luc Moullet’s Restored Films

Cinema Guild has officially secured the North American distribution rights for the restored works of Luc Moullet, the renowned French filmmaker.

Retrospective Tour of Moullet’s Films

The distribution deal includes plans for a touring retrospective of Moullet’s films, which will debut at Film at Lincoln Center in New York City this coming August. Luc Moullet, a prominent figure from the French New Wave era, is expected to attend the opening event.

The collection of films acquired by Cinema Guild features titles such as Brigitte and Brigitte, The Smugglers, A Girl is a Gun, Anatomy of a Relationship, Origins of a Meal, The Comedy of Work, and Parpaillon.

Moullet: A Pillar of French New Wave Cinema

Known affectionately as the “prince of shoestring cinema,” Luc Moullet emerged as a significant voice among the French New Wave’s later generation. His filmmaking career began in his teens when he joined the editorial team of Cahiers du Cinéma, becoming an early advocate for American B-movie directors such as Samuel Fuller and Edgar G. Ulmer.

Moullet’s transition from critic to filmmaker followed the path of other Cahiers contributors like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. His films are celebrated for their eclectic and irreverent style, often eschewing conventional filmmaking techniques. Jean-Marie Straub, a contemporary filmmaker, once hailed him as the “only heir to Luis Buñuel and Jacques Tati.”

Beyond directing and writing, Moullet has also produced films for other avant-garde directors, including Marguerite Duras and Jean Eustache.

Negotiating the Deal

The acquisition was facilitated by Peter Kelly and Edward McCarry representing Cinema Guild, and Gaël Teicher of La Traverse.

The distributor has recently added films by notable directors such as João César Monteiro from Portugal and Japan’s Shinji Somai to their catalog. Upcoming releases include By the Stream and What Does That Nature Say to You by Hong Sangsoo, as well as Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire.
