Disney+ has ultimately opted not to pursue a reboot of the beloved film The Sandlot.
In 2019, the streaming service announced plans for a series that would revisit the characters from the 1993 comedy, which centers on a group of kids in the 1960s who share a love of baseball. The original cast was even set to make a return. However, instead of moving forward with the nostalgic Sandlot revival, Disney decided to let the opportunity pass.
Despite the setback, the possibility of reviving the story remains open, and Sandlot actor Patrick Renna recently shared his thoughts on the matter in a discussion about the reboot’s failure to launch (reported by ComicBook.com). “They flirted with the idea of a sequel, and it’s challenging because you’re not just enhancing the original IP—you’re trying to surpass it, which is really impossible,” Renna explained.
The actor, who portrayed Hamilton “Ham” Porter, added, “How do you improve upon something that was perfect for its time? I’m always hesitant about these kinds of projects.” Renna also mentioned his condition for participating in a potential Sandlot revival: “If Disney or someone else decides to take it on, and if Shawn Levy were directing, I’d be on board because you’d want it to be outstanding and respectful to the original, which holds a special place in many hearts.”
Shawn Levy, known for creating Stranger Things, has a knack for projects that resonate with nostalgia while managing young actors effectively. Regarding the original Sandlot cast, who were children during the film’s production but are now adults, Renna revealed plans to reunite most of the group for a new baseball-themed TV show titled “Little League Dads,” where they will portray fathers of baseball-loving kids.
“At the end of June, I’m starting a TV show called Little League Dads,” Renna stated in a June 2026 interview with The Movie Nerds. “It’s going to feature episodes about five minutes long which I’ll upload to my YouTube channel, including all the Sandlot actors. We’ll all play dads. It won’t use any Sandlot IP, but it’s a kind of reunion, and it should be fun. As for a Sandlot sequel, who knows? It could still happen.”
The original Sandlot achieved a worldwide gross of $34 million in 1993. It led to the creation of direct-to-video sequels like The Sandlot 2 and The Sandlot: Heading Home, and inspired numerous Halloween costumes featuring characters Wendy Peffercorn and Squints. Additionally, a prequel to the original film was reported to be in development as of 2018, but no further updates have been provided.
