Epic Battle Finale Redone for Stronger Impact: PTA Confirms Enhanced Ending!

One Battle After Another Changed Ending With A Redo, & PTA Knew It Was "Stronger"

This article contains spoilers for One Battle After Another.

In One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, a significant change was made to the film’s climax. The movie, a comedic thriller, was released on September 26, featuring DiCaprio as a father and former key figure of a clandestine vigilante group known as the French 57. After betrayal by a partner, he and his daughter, Willa (played by Chase Infiniti), are forced to live off the grid.

Fast forward several decades, their hideout is compromised, and DiCaprio’s character, Bob, finds it difficult to leave. Meanwhile, Willa embarks on a journey with another group member and uncovers shocking truths about her lineage. A dramatic reveal by Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw discloses that he is her biological father.

After striking a deal to ensure her protection, Lockjaw becomes the target of Tim, from the Christmas Adventures club. In the climactic scene, Willa thwarts Tim’s attempt on her life just before Bob arrives on the scene.

In a Rolling Stone interview, DiCaprio and Anderson discussed the filming of this chase sequence and the alterations made to the film’s conclusion. The extensive chase from California’s northernmost to southernmost points is detailed in their conversation:

Anderson: The entire chase moved from one end of California to the other, near the hills along the Arizona border. Our intention was to bring our accidental hero, Bob, to join forces with the true protagonist, Willa. The dynamics during this chase, with another character in pursuit, were crucial. Luckily, we stumbled upon these fantastic rolling hills during a location scout. The thrill of driving blind over these hills at 85 mph really brought our vision to life.

There were numerous deliberations concerning the reunion of Bob and Willa, and “it wasn’t set in stone” until they were on set. Anderson shared that initially, the father and daughter embraced immediately upon meeting, but upon reflection, he sensed more depth was needed. Their reflections are as follows:

DiCaprio: We explored several possibilities for their final moment together.

Anderson: Yes, I initially glossed over that narrative detail. [Laughs.] At first, they hugged, but viewing the dailies made me realize we were missing deeper elements.

DiCaprio: Did we reshoot?

Anderson: Absolutely, we did. The reshoot allowed Willa to assert herself, to flip the script and seize control, which was exhilarating. Then it was about deciding who would survive this confrontation.

DiCaprio: “I’m your dad.”

Anderson: “I’m your dad.” These lines emerged from the process of discovery, from being on the road, rehearsing, and truly getting to know these characters. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but we didn’t have all this figured out when we started shooting. But eventually, we found a solution that felt right.

Anderson also mentioned that an earlier, darker ending was considered but ultimately rejected because it “didn’t feel right.”

DiCaprio: The openness to explore and evolve the story made the shooting experience unique. When Benicio del Toro joined us, he brought fresh ideas that significantly changed the dynamics on set.

Anderson: There was potential for a more somber narrative, but it didn’t resonate with us. Benicio’s arrival opened up new, more fitting narrative possibilities.

The Implications for Bob and Willa in One Battle After Another

Despite Bob’s efforts to reach Willa before Tim could harm her, he was too late, leaving Willa to fend for herself. The challenging terrain of the chase added a layer of intensity to the scene, while the desert highway posed a significant barrier between Bob and Willa.

The concluding scenes of One Battle After Another take the audience to Borrego Springs and Anza Borrego. Known as the Texas Dip, this location features prominently in the pivotal showdown between Willa and Tim. The scene where Lockjaw’s car overturns occurs in Borrego Springs, and the road where he leaves Avanti is in Ocotillo Wells.
