Transitioning from Tokyo to Bengaluru to Open a Venture Capital Branch
Moving from Tokyo to Bengaluru to establish a new branch of a venture capital firm was a significant change for me. The decision required not only professional preparation but also personal adjustments, particularly convincing my wife that relocating to India would be a beneficial move for our family.
Convincing My Family
The idea of moving from a well-established life in Tokyo to a new city like Bengaluru was daunting at first. It took several discussions to highlight the potential opportunities we could embrace in India, both in terms of career and lifestyle. My wife was initially hesitant, unsure about the cultural differences and the impact on our children’s education and social life. However, I shared insights about India’s growing economy, its vibrant startup ecosystem, and the quality of life we could enjoy. Gradually, she came around to the idea.
Adapting to Life in India
Once we moved, the transition was smoother than expected. Bengaluru, known as the Silicon Valley of India, offered an environment full of dynamism and innovation, which was perfect for our venture capital endeavors. The city’s cosmopolitan nature also made it easier for my family to adapt. We found international schools where our children easily made friends and continued their education seamlessly.
The local community was welcoming, and we were pleasantly surprised by the warmth with which people accepted and supported us. Living in Bengaluru allowed us to experience a blend of traditional Indian culture and modern conveniences, enriching our family’s life and broadening our global perspective.
Thriving Professionally and Personally
Professionally, the move proved to be a great decision. The entrepreneurial spirit in Bengaluru is palpable, with numerous startups and tech companies looking for capital and guidance. Opening a VC office here allowed us to tap into this burgeoning market and work directly with innovative entrepreneurs who are passionate about their ideas.
On a personal level, raising children in such a diverse environment has been rewarding. They have the chance to learn about different cultures and values firsthand, which has been an integral part of their upbringing. Moreover, the lifestyle in India, including its focus on community and family, has brought us closer together as a family.
Embracing Our New Home
Now, several years after our move, it’s clear that relocating to Bengaluru was the right choice. My wife and I cherish the professional opportunities and the family-friendly environment. Our initial doubts have been overshadowed by the enriching experiences and the new life we have built here. India has not just been a place of work but has become a home where we love to raise our kids and grow our careers.
