A Global Journey Through My Profession
Throughout my professional life, my wife and I embarked on an extraordinary global adventure that led us to live on five different continents. As my retirement approached, we faced a significant decision about where to settle down. Interestingly, returning to our homeland was not our preferred choice.
Deciding on a Retirement Destination
During my career, our lives had been a tapestry of diverse cultures, languages, and friendships spanning the globe. We thrived on the variety and richness that each location offered, from the bustling markets of Asia to the serene landscapes of Europe and the vibrant communities in Africa. This exposure not only broadened our horizons but also deeply influenced our perception of ‘home’.
When the time came to consider retirement, the thought of returning to where we started didn’t feel quite right. It seemed counterintuitive to confine ourselves to one place after years of nomadic lifestyle that had brought us immense joy and fulfillment.
Embracing a New Concept of Home
Our definition of home had evolved. It was no longer just a place of origin or a static location but a sense of where we felt most alive and connected. Each country we had lived in left a mark on us, contributing pieces to our mosaic of experiences.
The decision about where to retire was influenced by several factors, including climate, lifestyle, and proximity to nature, which had become increasingly important to us. We wanted a place that not only offered tranquility and beauty but also a vibrant community where we could engage and contribute.
Making the Final Choice
After much deliberation, we decided to settle in a country that was neither of our origins but somewhere we had fallen in love with during our travels. This place offered a perfect blend of mild weather, scenic beauty, and a welcoming community that resonated with our desire for a peaceful yet engaging retirement.
Our friends and family were initially surprised by our decision not to return ‘home’ but soon understood our need to follow what felt right for us. They saw that our global journey had changed us, expanding our concept of what home truly means.
Looking Forward to the Next Chapter
As we embark on this new phase of our lives, we look forward to the opportunities that retirement holds. It’s a chance to explore new hobbies, engage in community activities, and maybe even learn a new language.
Our life’s journey across continents has taught us the value of embracing change and the beauty of adopting new perspectives. We are excited about what lies ahead, knowing that ‘home’ is wherever we find joy and fulfillment.
