New Icelandic-Romanian Comedy-Drama Series Set for International Debut
EXCLUSIVE: A new comedy-drama series resulting from an Icelandic-Romanian collaboration is preparing for its international debut, highlighting the ongoing trend of European nations partnering to jumpstart film and TV productions.
The series, titled Hot Stuff, is a creation by Reykjavik’s Glassriver and Romanian production company Idea Film, and is intended for Icelandic broadcaster SÝN’s Channel 2 (Stöð 2). Paris-based distributor Oble has acquired the international distribution rights and plans to promote the series globally.
Reflecting the distinctive flavor of European co-productions, as recently seen at Series Mania, the collaborative effort between Iceland and Romania exemplifies a new strategy in the European production landscape, especially in the absence of U.S. funding. Last month, details were shared about another Series Mania project, Torna a Surriento, a Finnish-Italian drama series in development by Glassriver in collaboration with Finland’s Whatevergroup, Italy’s Viola Films, and Norway’s Rein Film.
Creative Team and Plot Details
Directed by Magnus Leifsson, known for Dovetail, and created and co-written by Ragnar Bragason, famed for the The Shift trilogy and the drama series The Prisoners, Hot Stuff is set in 1979. The comedy-drama follows a group of Icelanders on holiday in Spain, blending humor with poignant social commentary.
The series aims to tackle issues such as gender inequality, consumerism, and xenophobia through a mix of humor, romance, and critical social insights. It seeks to challenge insular thinking, toxic masculinity, and superficial activism through its narrative, offering a combination of moral-driven drama and comedy, designed to attract not only fans of traditional genres but also viewers seeking thought-provoking content.
Snjolaug Ludviksdottir, also a writer on the show, is known for her work adapting the Icelandic novel Konur (Women) for the screen, and for her role in writing the second season of the crime series Stella Blomquist.
Kristjana Thors Brynjolfsdottir, Director of Media at SÝN, commented, “Hot Stuff embodies the bold, character-driven storytelling we value at SÝN. It’s smart, stylish, and socially relevant, expertly weaving humor with sharp insights in a way that feels both nostalgic and strikingly modern. We’re excited to present this ambitious series to Icelandic viewers and to support stories that resonate globally.”
“We’re taking a nostalgic trip back to the 70s,” added Andri Ómarsson, co-owner and producer at Glassriver. “With Hot Stuff, we are presenting a unique story that spans various genres and topics, set against the vibrant backdrop of sunny Spain in 1979. Together with our partners at IDEA Film, we are eager for this series to heat up.”
Among other projects, Glassriver recently announced the Icelandic-Finnish climate disaster miniseries Avalanche and has secured options for adaptations of Elma by Eva Björg Ægisdottir and Reykjavik Noir by Lilja Sigurdardottir. Additionally, the company is developing Cold Haven, an eight-episode crime thriller in co-production with Portugal’s SPi, and has past successes with international drama As Long as We Live, medical drama Fractures, and Black Sands, which debuted at Berlinale and is slated for additional seasons.
Meanwhile, Idea Film, led by CEO Ionut Ionescu and production chief Andreea Apetre, has a history of Romanian-American collaborations and has produced series like Sabina: Tortured for Christ – The Nazi Years, Between Borders, and Dictators’ Hideouts. The company also provides production services for well-known franchises such as Lego Ninjago and Asterix.
