Kristen Stewart, widely recognized for her acting career, has recently ventured into directing, marking her first foray with an exceptionally high rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Stewart’s film, The Chronology of Water, boasts a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir and caught significant attention when The Forge secured the domestic distribution rights at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Chronology of Water narrates the life of a competitive swimmer grappling with her challenging past and painful memories, seeking refuge and expression in literature. The source material, Yuknavitch’s memoir, was a bestseller, exploring themes of personal voice discovery and the transformative power of trauma into art. The cast includes notable actors such as Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, Jim Belushi, and Tom Sturridge.
The Forge plans to release the film theatrically in North America later this year, with expectations for a broader distribution by early January. Mark Mathias Sayre, CEO of The Forge, praised Stewart’s directorial execution, describing it as a creation of a distinctive world filled with pain, desire, and rebellion.
Stewart’s journey with The Chronology of Water spanned eight years, during which Sayre expressed his high hopes for the film, highlighting its unique and profound impact, driven by Imogen Poots’ compelling performance.
Stewart has established herself in the film industry with her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga and has since pursued roles in more independent projects. Her portfolio includes performances in Love Lies Bleeding, Charlie’s Angels, and Adventureland.
Imogen Poots is also celebrated for her work in films like 28 Weeks Later, Green Room, and Filth. She’s expected to appear in the upcoming A24 movie October, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, featuring Stephen Root, James Badge Dale, and Chase Sui Wonders.
Initial reviews for The Chronology of Water have lauded Poots for her leading role, with critiques noting her performance as Stewart’s “greatest asset.” Others have commended Stewart for her directing style, which is described as “direct, fragmented, and visceral.”
