France’s Les Arcs Coproduction Village Announces Selection for its 2023 Session
The 17th edition of the Les Arcs Coproduction Village, set to take place in December, has officially selected 18 European feature film projects. This prestigious event is part of the Les Arcs Film Festival’s Industry Village, held in the scenic French Alps.
Among the selected projects are new works from notable filmmakers such as Lina Soualem, Arman T. Riahi, and the directing pair Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov. Detailed information about each project follows below.
Lina Soualem, a director of French, Palestinian, and Algerian descent, known for her critically acclaimed works Bye Bye Tiberias and Their Algeria, brings her debut fiction feature Alicante. The film follows a young woman who heads to Spain to assist at her family’s eatery while finding her path in life amidst the aftermath of a romantic separation in New York.
Arman T. Riahi, the Iranian-Austrian filmmaker behind Everyday Rebellion, presents Riot/Girl. This film marks Riahi’s return after five years since Fox in a Hole, and centers on a 17-year-old Iranian girl relocated to Austria for a nose surgery.
The Bulgarian director duo, Grozeva and Valchanov, known for their films Triumph and The Father, will introduce their latest project, Love In The Time Of Communism.
This initiative aims to assist film projects in securing coproducers, sales agents, distributors, and other financial backers. In the past, it has supported successful films like the Oscar-winning animation Flow and the Venice Grand Jury Prize winner Vermiglio.
The festival has also been instrumental in launching the careers of several first-time filmmakers whose works have been featured at Cannes, including Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s Camera d’Or winning Armand, and The Girl in the Snow by Louise Hémon, as well as The Girls We Want by Prïncia Car, both of which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight.
From a pool of 391 submissions, this year’s selection includes nine projects directed by women, two by mixed-gender teams, and seven by men. Projects directed by women accounted for 41% of all submissions.
The competing projects will vie for the Eurimages Co-production Development Award, which carries a prize of €20,000, and the ArteKino International Award, valued at €6,000.
With Greece as the spotlight country this year, three Greek projects have been especially invited to the Coproduction Village, accompanied by a delegation of Greek cinema professionals.
Additionally, the Industry Village will host a variety of conferences, workshops, and masterclasses, with further details to be announced shortly.
The Coproduction Village will coincide with the Music Village, expected to attract over 200 industry professionals—including music supervisors, editors, and composers—for sessions focused on networking and skill development in both music and cinema.
The event is scheduled from December 13 to 16.
