EXCLUSIVE: Capture Entertainment is commencing international distribution at the Cannes Film Festival for the dark comedy Kaet Might Die, which is based on Kaet McAnneny’s memoir about her battle with cancer, titled Boobs Gone Rogue.
The production of the film has recently concluded, featuring performances by Golden Globe and Emmy award winner Awkwafina (The Farewell), Grammy award winner Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), and The Hangover celebrity Ken Jeong. The film marks a reunion for Crazy Rich Asians co-stars Awkwafina and Jeong, who portray a father-daughter duo in this project.
Mercedes Bryce Morgan, known for her recent directorial work in the 2025 erotic horror Bone Lake, directs this adaptation scripted by Angela Gulner and Yuri Baranovsky. The narrative centers on a woman (played by Awkwafina) whose life is thrown into disarray by a cancer diagnosis, compelling her to find solace in humor and fantasy to cope with her deteriorating marriage and domineering family.
Capture Entertainment shares the domestic sales representation with CAA. The film is produced by several studios including Balcony 9 Productions (Dead Man’s Wire), Whitewater Films (Mean Creek), Invention Studios (Severance), Fever Dream Studios (Appendage), and Toric Films (Oscar Shaw). The production team consists of Joel David Moore, Katrina Kudlick, Rick Rosenthal, Nicholas Weinstock, Sarah Cornelius, Ojan Missaghi, David Wachs, and Chase Hinton.
Director Morgan expressed her enthusiasm about the project, noting, “This incredible script, while rooted in real events, is conveyed through a darkly humorous, exaggerated, and surreal lens. In times of darkness, laughter can be a powerful response. Awkwafina’s unique ability to balance these tones, supported by a cast that complements this energy, was crucial to the film’s narrative.”
Producer Joel David Moore commented on the adaptation’s process, “When Kaet shared her memoir with me, her bold and comedic perspective on her life’s toughest challenges seemed like it would connect widely with viewers. Mercedes and the team have exceeded my expectations, bringing this story to life in extraordinary ways, highlighted by a landmark performance from Awkwafina.”
Awkwafina and McAnneny also contribute as executive producers, along with a substantial team including Rishi Bajaj, Vinny Smith, and several others. Arlie Day and Mike Page are involved as co-producers and casting directors, with a lengthy list of additional executive producers contributing to the project.
