While numerous key Avengers have starred in their own Marvel Cinematic Universe films, a standalone movie for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk remains absent. As the MCU has advanced into Phase 6, a host of new superheroes have been introduced, many of whom have received their standalone films.
In a recent conversation with GQ, the seasoned superhero actor was queried about his desire for a solo Hulk film. Since his introduction in 2012 with The Avengers, he remarked, “Yes, I would love a solo Hulk film. However, you might not be aware that Marvel does not actually own the character; it belongs to Universal. I’m uncertain if it will ever happen.”
Ruffalo explained that “We often discuss what it could be like.” Yet, he also questioned the necessity of another Hulk movie, considering the multiple adaptations already produced, the most recent being 2008’s The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton.
Despite this, Ruffalo expressed eagerness to lead a potential solo film if the opportunity arises, stating, “But I would definitely enjoy one, and I believe the audience would appreciate it if we could just figure it out.” Even without a solo feature, Hulk has been prominently featured throughout the MCU.
Due to the film rights of Hulk being owned by Universal, Ruffalo’s portrayal has primarily been in supporting roles throughout various MCU phases. To date, Bruce has appeared in every Avengers movie, including Avengers: Endgame.
The most recent appearance of Ruffalo in a live-action Marvel Studios production was in the 2022 TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, Bruce’s cousin. However, Ruffalo is set to return to the big screen in 2026.
On August 1, 2025, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Ruffalo’s Hulk will feature in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast, with Tom Holland reprising his role as the titular character for the first time since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Phase 6 movie will also include Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, marking Frank Castle’s cinematic debut under the Marvel Studios banner.
Currently, it’s uncertain if Hulk will be a part of the Avengers: Doomsday lineup, as Ruffalo was not mentioned in the unexpected live-stream announcement on March 26, 2025. Nonetheless, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will provide at least one 2026 MCU film featuring Hulk.
