Orlando Bloom Unveils Secret to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Success: “Get Everybody Back”

Johnny Depp is smiling in Pirates of the Caribbean

Orlando Bloom, known for his role as Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, recently shared his thoughts on the success of the original trilogy and what might be ahead for the franchise. Bloom was a central figure in the first three films alongside Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush, and also made a brief appearance in the series’ fifth film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Since the release of the latest Pirates movie in 2017, fans have been eagerly anticipating another sequel. Amidst ongoing speculations and setbacks, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the upcoming script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 includes a part specifically for Johnny Depp, who has portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow throughout the franchise.

Speaking to ScreenRant during the Fan Expo Chicago, Orlando Bloom discussed the enduring appeal of the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the potential for future installments. Bloom highlighted the timeless nature of the existing movies and contemplated the prospects of a new sequel.

Bloom expressed his openness to participating in future installments, emphasizing the significance of a well-crafted script. Below is his response when asked about delving deeper into his character, Will Turner:

“The opportunity we had to create those films, and Lord of the Rings as well, really stands the test of time because they capture a specific filmmaking era. And who wouldn’t want to be a part of that again? If the script is outstanding. I think the challenge now is figuring out the approach. Perhaps introducing a female lead similar to Jack? It’s uncertain how to replicate that success, but it would be exciting if done right.”

“Ultimately, everything depends on the script. If it’s well-written, I think there’s potential to create something special. I would personally love to see everyone return.”

Regarding the future of the franchise, Bloom believes that bringing back the original cast could lead to success by tapping into audience nostalgia. Yet, he also noted that he has not seen any details about the sixth movie yet. His thoughts are shared below:

“The best approach might be to reunite the original cast, if possible. I think fans would appreciate the nostalgia, right? If the script is excellent and everyone is on board, it would be worth it. But so far, I haven’t seen anything, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Implications for Will Turner in the Future of Pirates of the Caribbean

Bloom indicated that a compelling script is his primary criterion for returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean series. While Bruckheimer has hinted at some original cast members returning in the sixth film, details remain scarce, leaving Bloom’s involvement as Will Turner uncertain.

Will Turner became the eternal captain of the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and was nearly turned into a creature in the fifth film when his son Henry encountered him. Calypso mentioned that Davy Jones began to transform only after abandoning his duties, suggesting that Will’s story has more to explore. However, as Bloom emphasized, such a narrative should not be pursued without a strong script.

Recently, several long-standing franchises have successfully reintroduced original characters, from Scary Movie 6 to Dexter: Resurrection. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise could similarly benefit from a sequel featuring the original cast, though it remains unclear if Depp will participate.

Perspectives on Will Turner’s Role in the Future of Pirates of the Caribbean

The likelihood of Will’s return in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 largely depends on the film’s direction. Neither Orlando Bloom nor Keira Knightley appeared in the fourth film, as both were pursuing other projects at the time. Knightley had expressed a desire to do only three films, while Bloom was exploring new opportunities.

Although reuniting the original cast presents challenges, the unpredictable nature of Hollywood means anything is possible. With Depp potentially reprising his role despite previous reservations about working with Disney again, there may be opportunities for other original cast members to return, contingent on the quality of the script, as Bloom has highlighted.
