Lukas Dhont’s recent film, Coward, has been chosen to represent Belgium in the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards.
The film, directed by Dhont and co-written with Angelo Tijssens, takes place during the intense periods of World War I. It centers on Pierre (played by Emmanuel Macchia), a new recruit at the war front who is keen to demonstrate his valor. In the midst of war, he encounters Francis (portrayed by Valentin Campagne), who seeks to boost the morale of his fellow soldiers by organizing a theatrical performance. Amidst ongoing conflict, both characters seek brief respite from the harsh realities of warfare.
Produced by Reunion, Lumen, Topkapi Films & Versus (Opus) in collaboration with France 2 Cinéma, VTM, RTBF, Proximus, BeTV & Orange, Coward is a multinational production effort. It also includes contributions from The Common Humanity Art Trust and Portobello Productions.
Distribution of the film in the Benelux countries will be handled by Lumière, while Diaphana Distribution will manage its release in France. Mubi has secured rights for distribution in North America, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, with the film slated for a North American theatrical release on December 25.

In a review from the Cannes Film Festival, Pete Hammond of Deadline characterized the movie as a “heartbreaking screen love story.”
Hammond noted, “Lukas Dhont’s films show a keen focus on human emotions and identity, a unique perspective that is especially significant today. Though Coward unfolds in a wartime setting, its essence is deeply rooted in the human spirit.”
