EXCLUSIVE: Patrick Schwarzenegger, known for roles in The White Lotus and Love of Your Life, has been cast as the lead in the crime thriller The Journeyman. He will portray a struggling professional tennis player who, desperate to provide for his family, becomes entangled in illicit match-fixing.
Leslie Grace, who broke out in In the Heights, is set to play his devoted fiancée. The film will be directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto (The Wrecking Crew), from a screenplay written by the husband-and-wife writing team The Roberts, with subsequent rewrites by Bill Dubuque (Ozark).
AGC Studios is putting up the full financing for the picture and will produce it. Producing duties are led by Stuart Ford alongside Bryan Haas (The Order), Mason Eways and Scott Franklin (Black Swan). AGC executives Miguel A. Palos, Jr., Zach Garrett and Anant Tamirisa are attached as executive producers.
Production is scheduled to begin on November 30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Local production support will be provided by The Pimienta Film Company.
Schwarzenegger, who recently appeared on The White Lotus, is currently working on Mike Birbiglia’s Focus Features comedy Old Friends New Friends. Grace has just released a new album, Amor Quien Eres?, through Sony Music Latin.
Director Ángel Manuel Soto most recently made the Amazon MGM action-comedy The Wrecking Crew starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista. His earlier credits include Blue Beetle for Warner Bros./DC — notable as the first major-studio superhero movie led by a Latino protagonist — and Charm City Kings, which debuted at Sundance and earned a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for its ensemble.
AGC International will handle the film’s global sales and plans to keep pitching the project at the American Film Market next month. Domestic sales are being co-handled by UTA and WME alongside AGC.
The Journey-man project has been in development for several years; at one point actor Dev Patel was attached to star and Tarsem Singh was set to direct.
