Colleen Hoover's New Thriller Dropped by Hundreds of Theaters: Box Office Disaster

Just three weeks after hitting theaters, Verity has already taken a noticeable tumble.

Anne Hathaway’s newest film, Verity, is encountering a tough box-office stretch as it begins its third weekend. The psychological thriller — adapted from Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel — was released by Amazon MGM Studios on October 2, 2026. Directed by Michael Showalter, the movie pairs Hathaway with Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett and follows a struggling writer who accepts a position working for a celebrated author only to be pulled into a maze of unsettling deceptions.

According to box-office tracker The Numbers, the picture has shed roughly 500 venues going into the latest weekend, shrinking its domestic footprint from about 3,572 theaters to roughly 3,072. That drop amounts to nearly a 14% reduction in screens in under a month. Even with the pullback, Verity remains one of the more broadly distributed releases in North America, still playing in just over 3,000 locations in its third week.

The reduction in theaters comes after a steep fall in ticket sales during the film’s sophomore weekend. Verity opened at No. 1 domestically, earning $32 million in its debut frame while playing in approximately 3,510 cinemas. But its receipts plunged about 63% in week two, bringing in some $12 million and slipping to the second spot on the domestic chart.

That sharp weekend-to-weekend decline paints a more dramatic picture than the film’s cumulative revenue, however. To date the thriller has collected about $58.9 million in the U.S. and Canada and roughly $60.1 million overseas, putting the global total near $119 million. Given a reported production budget of around $40 million, the adaptation has already taken in almost three times its production cost. Still, studios don’t retain the full box-office haul — marketing, distribution and other expenses are not covered by the production budget figure, and those costs reduce the studio’s net take.

Verity originated as Hoover’s 2018 psychological-romance thriller novel. Hoover originally self-published the book on December 7, 2018; a new edition was later issued in 2021 by Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. The novel drew praise from readers, landing a nomination in the romance category at the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards, and it was honored as Page-turner of the Year at the 2023 British Book Awards.

Despite the book’s popularity, the cinematic version has struggled to win over critics and many moviegoers. Reviews have been overwhelmingly negative from both professional critics and larger audience segments, and viewers in general appear underwhelmed by the story’s execution. At the time this article was written, Verity held a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Verity is currently playing in theaters.
