The anticipation has finally been met as Project Hail Mary makes its way to streaming platforms after a three-month delay.
The science fiction film, adapted from Andy Weir’s popular novel, garnered both critical acclaim and box office success upon its release. Initially, it impressively opened with $80 million and continued to break box office records, leading Amazon MGM Studios to prolong its time in cinemas. This extension, however, resulted in postponing its availability on streaming services.
As Project Hail Mary begins to phase out from theaters, it is set to premiere on the streaming service MGM+ (previously known as Epix) starting June 18. The film has been accessible for rental on video-on-demand platforms like Vudu since mid-May. MGM+ is owned by Amazon and offers subscriptions through its own site or via Prime Video at a monthly fee of $7.99, though it remains uncertain if it will be more broadly available on Prime Video.
During its debut weekend, Project Hail Mary achieved a record-breaking launch for Amazon, and shortly thereafter, it became the studio’s top-grossing film ever. It even surpassed Ridley Scott’s The Martian in earnings, making it the most profitable film based on a Weir novel. At the conclusion of its theatrical showing, Project Hail Mary had amassed over $680 million, far outstripping its $200 million budget.
The film’s success is notable as it is neither a sequel nor part of a franchise. It has received widespread acclaim, holding a 94% rating from critics and a 95% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive reception and multiple viewings significantly contributed to its robust box office performance, cementing its status as a hit.
Project Hail Mary features Ryan Gosling as a scientist embarked on a solo mission to save Earth by addressing a microorganism that threatens the sun. Throughout his voyage, he forms a bond with a character named Rocky, with whom he collaborates to rescue their worlds. The film has been praised for its compelling narrative, stunning visual effects, and the chemistry between the characters, positioning it as a strong contender for upcoming awards.
This success has increased interest in adapting more of Weir’s works. His novel, Artemis, has been in development for nearly a decade with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmakers behind Project Hail Mary. In a recent discussion with ScreenRanter, the duo revealed significant progress on this next project, indicating it as a high priority.

If I decide to write it, it has to be good.” Currently, Amazon has not confirmed plans to develop a movie franchise based on the book. However, fans are close to being able to enjoy the film from their homes as its streaming release is imminent.
