Caution: Spoilers included for the conclusion of Greenland 2: Migration. The latest film featuring Gerard Butler, Greenland 2: Migration, is generating a lot of buzz especially regarding its climactic twist. His colleague Morena Baccarin, famed for her role in Deadpool, shares her surprising reaction and insights into the finale.
In a conversation with CinemaBlend, Baccarin discussed the impactful death of Butler’s character, John Garrity, a moment that took her by surprise when she first learned of the narrative decision. In the movie, John Garrity, his spouse Allison (played by Baccarin), and their child Nathan (portrayed by Roman Griffin Davis) journey from Greenland across to Europe in search of a new safe haven.
The storyline takes a tragic turn when John is found to have cancer, brought on by exposure to radioactive contamination from their travels through devastated lands. As the film reaches its peak, John’s primary goal to secure his family’s safety ends in sacrifice. He dies from a gunshot wound, with his wife and son by his side, just as they find refuge.
Baccarin expressed her initial shock at the film’s conclusion, a sentiment echoed by many viewers and critics as the series’ main character meets a heartbreaking fate:
“I was aware of their plans for John’s character when I joined the film, and it really shocked me. But looking back, it fits perfectly with everything we’ve experienced. It truly cements John as the ultimate hero who sacrificed everything for his family’s future.”
With the future of the franchise uncertain due to the demise of Butler’s character, Baccarin reflected on the potential path forward for the surviving mother and son:
“I imagine that regeneration on Earth will take on new forms. Life will certainly change, yet it might retain echoes of our past. After such widespread destruction, the small signs of life we observe—trees, grass, and the sound of birds—suggest that rebirth is part of a natural cycle, and we’re now entering that phase of renewal.”
While a sequel to Greenland 2 remains a possibility, Baccarin’s comments hint at what could be explored in future installments. Despite Greenland 2: Migration receiving a lukewarm reception with a rating of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is notably lower than its predecessor’s 77%, the storyline evidently still holds potential for further development.
