Ryan Coogler’s Candid Confession: “Very Nervous” After Oscar Win for ‘Sinners’

Sinners Writer Ryan Coogler Says He’s “Very Nervous” After Winning His First Oscar

Ryan Coogler clinched the Best Original Screenplay award at the 98th Academy Awards for Sinners and confessed during his acceptance that he felt “very nervous.”

As Coogler’s name was announced, applause filled the room. He not only penned the script but also directed the movie, which featured performances by Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld, and Delroy Lindo. Stepping onto the stage, he paused for the applause to quiet before humbly sharing with the audience his nervousness about delivering his acceptance speech.

He lightened the mood with a self-deprecating joke, saying, “Please, please, please sit down, because I’m very nervous and they’re going to play me off. I’m from Oakland, California, and we’re known for talking a lot.” He proceeded to express his gratitude to the Academy and his fellow nominees.

“I want to thank the Academy for remembering our film that debuted nearly a year ago. This is an extraordinary privilege. I want to thank my fellow nominees. I am grateful for the incredible films you’ve all made and for the camaraderie we’ve shared throughout this time.”

Coogler was in competition with Robert Kaplow for Blue Moon; It Was Just an Accident, penned by Jafar Panahi and collaborators Nader Saïvar, Shadmehr Rastin, Mehdi Mahmoudian; Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Eskil Vogt along with Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value.

The director then acknowledged the team behind Sinners, extending his thanks to “everyone involved in this movie,” which included the cast, crew, and Warner Bros. “You guys are incredible. Oh my God, you are all winners in my view.” He concluded his remarks by thanking his parents, his wife, Zinzi, and his three children.

Zinzi, you are the best wife and mother anyone could ask for. Every day I spend with you surpasses the last. To my parents who are here today, thank you for the countless memories. Thank you for instilling in me the belief in my own abilities. And to my children who are watching at home, I’m sorry for the times I’ve been away. Dad loves you. Memories are all we have, and I hope I’ve provided you with some joyous ones. And when I’m just a memory, remember this one thing above all: I love you more than anything.”

Sinners received an unprecedented 16 nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations received by a single film in the history of the Oscars. Coogler’s screenplay win marked the first Oscar for Sinners, followed by Ludwig Göransson’s victory in the Best Original Score category.
