Scott Cooper to Direct Michael Mann’s Western ‘Comanche’
Michael Mann has disclosed that director Scott Cooper will be at the helm of his long-awaited Western film, Comanche. The film draws inspiration from the life of Cynthia Ann Parker, a white woman who was abducted by the Comanche tribe during her childhood and subsequently assimilated into their community.
When asked about the status of two Western films he has been considering, Mann shared his plans at the Lumière Festival in Lyon. “I’ve always wanted to make a Western. Among the two scripts I have, I’ve decided not to direct one myself. Instead, I’ll produce while Scott Cooper directs—it’s titled Comanche,” he explained during a masterclass session.
The screenplay for Comanche was co-written by Mann and Eric Roth in the early 2000s, but it has faced delays in production until now.
Scott Cooper’s Upcoming Projects and More from Michael Mann
Scott Cooper, known for his actor-director dual role, is currently preparing for the release of his latest film, a Bruce Springsteen biopic titled Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, featuring Jeremy Allen White as the iconic musician.
Michael Mann also provided updates on another anticipated project, Heat 2. He revealed that negotiations are in progress and expressed his hope to begin filming in 2026. Recently, it was reported by Deadline that the sequel to Mann’s renowned crime thriller Heat has been acquired by Amazon MGM Studios division United Artists, transitioning from Warner Bros. after a lengthy development phase.
Additionally, it has come to light that Leonardo DiCaprio is potentially going to star as Chris Shiherlis, a character originally portrayed by Val Kilmer in the 1995 film.
Mann was honored as the guest of the Lumière Festival in Lyon, an event dedicated to celebrating cinematic heritage. Thierry Frémaux, the head of the Institut Lumière and Cannes delegate general, hosted Mann’s masterclass where he discussed his extensive filmography.
During his session, Mann reminisced about several of his past films showcased at the festival, including The Jericho Mile (1979), Thief (1981), The Keep (1983), Manhunter (1986), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Ali (2001), and Collateral (2004).
The highlight of the festival will be the presentation of the Lumière Award to Mann, recognizing his contributions to the film industry. This prestigious accolade places him among past recipients such as Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Jane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton, and Isabelle Huppert. The award ceremony is expected to draw a crowd of 3,000 attendees.
