Shocking Loss: ‘Urban Legend’ Director Jamie Blanks Dies at 54

Jamie Blanks Dies: Australian Director Of Studio Movies ‘Urban Legend’ & ‘Valentine’ Was 54

Australian director and composer Jamie Blanks passed away unexpectedly on Monday, as announced by his relatives. He was 54 years old.

The family revealed through a post on X that Jamie died suddenly at his residence in Melbourne, Australia, on 16 March. They described his death as unexpected, although he had faced some health issues in recent years.

Jamie Blanks gained recognition for his contributions to the horror genre, both as a director and a composer.

Born in Melbourne, Blanks pursued his passion for film at the Swinburne Film School. He started his career directing several short films, but his major breakthrough came with the 1998 horror hit Urban Legend produced by TriStar Pictures. This film, featuring stars such as Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, and Alicia Witt, grossed $72 million worldwide.

Blanks once shared that his journey to directing Urban Legend started when a manager who had seen his student work sent him screenplays for Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Despite not being selected for these projects due to his limited experience, the process motivated him to prove his directing skills.

In an interview, he mentioned that he decided to film a trailer instead of just a few scenes to showcase his capabilities. With a budget of $3,000 and the help of friends, he shot a compelling trailer on 35mm film. Although the director’s role for I Know What You Did Last Summer had already been assigned to Jim Gillespie, his trailer impressed the producers enough to promise him a future directing opportunity. True to their word, nine months later, he was offered Urban Legend.

Blanks acknowledged the support of Phoenix Pictures and producer Neal Moritz for giving him the chance to direct, despite his relative inexperience. He believed they were convinced by his genuine passion for the horror genre.

He later directed the 2001 Warner Bros film Valentine, starring David Boreanaz, Denise Richards, and Katherine Heigl, although it did not achieve the same commercial success as Urban Legend. In subsequent years, he directed Storm Warning in 2007 and Long Weekend in 2008, starring Jim Caviezel. Later, he shifted focus towards composing music for films, including Crawlspace and the 2025 horror What Are You Afraid Of?, distributed by Cleopatra Entertainment in the U.S.

According to his family’s social media post, Jamie remained actively involved in supporting other filmmakers and developing his own projects up until his last days.

The family’s message highlighted Jamie’s remarkable qualities: talent, kindness, and a generous spirit. They encouraged those who knew him to honor his memory by watching his movies or one of his favorite inspirations, John Carpenter’s The Fog.

The film and genre community expressed deep sorrow over his sudden demise. Notable genre platform Bloody Disgusting and various colleagues, including writer and producer Tom Vaughan, shared their condolences and memories of Jamie online.

Jamie Blanks is survived by his wife, Simone; his son, Oliver; his parents, and his brothers.
