Equity General Secretary Re-Elected By Actors’ Union With Support From Stars Like Olivia Colman

Paul W. Fleming Re-Elected as General Secretary of Equity

Paul W. Fleming has successfully been re-elected for a second term as the general secretary of the UK actors’ union, Equity. His re-election was bolstered by endorsements from prominent actors such as Olivia Colman, Judi Dench, and Simon Pegg.

In the recent election, Fleming competed against stunt professional Riky Ash and achieved a commanding victory with 81% of the votes. His win ensures his leadership at the helm of the union for another five-year term, extending his tenure until 2030.

Fleming expressed his gratitude and honor in continuing his role, stating, “It is an overwhelming honour to be re-elected as General Secretary of Equity. Our union is among the most tenacious in advocating for its members, and to receive reaffirmation from our council, activists, and the entire membership for another term is truly humbling.”

He further commented on the future direction and the challenges that the union faces, saying, “Our union is prepared to tackle the pressing issues that confront Equity members – ranging from the implications of Artificial Intelligence and ensuring dignity at work, to improving pay, safeguarding performance venues, and adapting to contemporary work practices.”

Since his initial election as general secretary in 2020, Fleming has enjoyed the support of some of the UK’s top-tier actors including Naomie Harris, Hayley Atwell, Maxine Peake, and Imelda Staunton. His tenure has been marked by significant negotiations, including a recent agreement with the BBC. However, discussions are ongoing with Pact, the trade association representing UK producers.
