“Weapons” Maintains Lead with Minimal Second-Week Decline
This piece was originally penned on Saturday morning and has since been revised on Sunday morning to include the latest box office estimates (highlighted in bold), a complete ranking, and additional insights.
“Weapons” has clinched the top spot at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. Directed by Zach Cregger, this horror flick premiered on August 8 and quickly outranked its contemporary, Freakier Friday, with a three-day opening of $43.5 million. By the end of its first week, it had already grossed over $100 million globally.
“Weapons” faced considerable competition in its second week, with four significant new releases hitting theaters. These included Bob Odenkirk’s action-packed sequel Nobody 2, Spike Lee’s remake of Kurosawa’s Highest 2 Lowest—his first collaboration with Denzel Washington since Inside Man in 2006—the horror reboot Witchboard, and the Sydney Sweeney-led crime drama Americana.
According to Variety, by Sunday morning, “Weapons” is expected to pull in about $25 million in its second weekend, easily maintaining its number one position despite a 43% drop from its debut weekend.
This decrease is notably sharper than that of this year’s earlier horror success, Sinners, which saw just a 4.8% drop in its second week. However, the performance of “Weapons” is still impressive, especially given that horror films typically see second-week declines of 50% or more.
Meanwhile, it appears that Nobody 2 is poised to be the most successful among this week’s new entries. However, it is projected to only capture the third spot with $9.2 million, trailing behind Freakier Friday, which is holding strong at second place with $14.5 million, reflecting a 50% drop.
Nobody 2 is also the sole newcomer to break into the top five. Below is the domestic box office chart for the weekend:
