Breaking News: Jafar Panahi Speaks Out After Raid on Ali Ahmadzadeh’s Home: Iranian Cinema Under Threat!

Jafar Panahi Raises Alarm For Fellow Iranian Director Ali Ahmadzadeh Following Raid On Home

Ali Ahmadzadeh Faces Imminent Threats After Home Invasion

Ali Ahmadzadeh, an Iranian filmmaker celebrated for his award-winning movie Critical Zone, is currently living under the threat of arrest. His home was forcibly entered by fifty armed individuals this week while he was involved in the production of a new project.

During the incident, Ahmadzadeh reported that these intruders confiscated his personal belongings including his mobile phone, computer equipment, a hard drive containing his previous films, various awards such as the Golden Leopard, and all his film production gear, which he had rented.

“They seized everything from my home: paintings, documents, photographs, my passport, identity cards, and access to bank accounts. It’s a severe blow to the independence of Iranian cinema,” Ahmadzadeh explained in an email shared with Deadline.

Director Summoned Under Duress

The situation escalated when one of the raiders, at gunpoint, handed Ahmadzadeh a summons to appear at the Ministry of Information. He interprets this action as a precursor to his possible incarceration.

Renowned director Jafar Panahi, who has previously been imprisoned in Iran for advocating cinematic freedom, publicized videos of Ahmadzadeh’s plundered residence, denouncing the act as “government terrorism.”

“What Ali Ahmadzadeh endured was not merely an armed robbery but an act of psychological terror aimed at crushing spirits and eradicating hope,” Panahi articulated. “Such actions are intended to break the resolve of artists, but they fail to recognize that dreams cannot be quashed with fear and weaponry.”

Panahi criticized the Iranian government’s contradictory approach, highlighting its pretense of engaging with opposition and its professed desire to welcome back artists from exile. He questioned whether returning artists would be met with abduction or forced into silence and compliance.

A Critical Moment for Iranian Filmmakers

Panahi emphasized the significance of the raid, marking it as a crucial point for the Iranian cinema community. He warned that remaining silent could potentially lead to broader targeting of Iranian filmmakers, including those working within the licensed framework.

Ahmadzadeh has previously attracted the ire of Iranian conservative forces due to his film Critical Zone, which was shot covertly in Tehran using amateur actors and without the necessary filming permits. The film, a joint Iranian-German venture, portrays a drug dealer’s journey through Tehran’s underbelly in a single night.

Following the selection of Critical Zone for the Locarno Film Festival in 2023, Ahmadzadeh faced substantial pressure from Iranian officials to withdraw his film and was barred from traveling abroad to attend the festival.
