Halle Berry is not frequently seen giving interviews, but she recently took the time to speak with a media outlet to discuss the reasons behind her reticence. In the interview, the Academy Award-winning actress also touched upon her 2005 Razzie Award and discussed her venture into the menopause-care industry with her startup, Respin.
The Monster’s Ball actress engaged in a thorough conversation with The Cut, where she discussed a variety of topics. Berry mentioned that she has largely avoided media interviews over the last decade because they tend to be repetitive and focus on the same issues.
“I essentially quit doing interviews for ten years because I was bored of the repetitive narratives,” Berry explained. According to The Cut, Berry feels that she has been “typecast” due to her past relationships and is often “misperceived.” She has been married three times, including to baseball player David Justice and singer Eric Benet. Berry also has a son with French actor Olivier Martinez, from her third marriage.
As per The Cut, the conclusion of each marriage was quickly sensationalized in the tabloids, often highlighting personal aspects like custody disputes. “Following my third divorce, there began to be murmurs of ‘What’s wrong with her? She’s insane. She can’t maintain a relationship,’” Berry recounted. “And I’ve consistently countered, ‘Why should I hold onto a man if he’s not the right one?’“
The X-Men actress expressed her frustration with how every interview invariably circled back to her romantic life. “It was always the same: Poor Halle, unlucky in love once more,” she shared with the publication.
When asked by the interviewer to suggest a headline that would accurately represent her, Berry responded: “Hmm. Halle Berry Is Not a Damsel in Distress.” After some thought, she added two more: “Halle Berry Is Not a Victim of Failed Relationships,” and “Halle Berry Never Blamed Anyone Else.“
Berry, who clinched an Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball, also briefly reflected on her 2005 Razzie Award for Catwoman. “I’ve always understood that the Oscar didn’t make me the best, just as the Razzie doesn’t make me the worst,” she remarked.
Berry emphasized the importance of accountability, recalling a lesson from her teacher, Yvonne Sims. “She taught me early on that nothing happens to you; it happens with you. If you don’t own up to your role, you’ll repeat the same mistakes,” Berry noted. Sims has remained a close friend and is the godmother to both of Berry’s children.
Finally, Berry discussed her menopause support platform, Respin. “I’m nearly 60. Advocating for women’s health feels like the perfect challenge for my next chapter,” she stated. She acknowledged that Respin is “primarily me investing my time and resources.“
Despite the challenges, Berry conveyed a sense of necessity in her entrepreneurial journey. “I felt compelled to act,” she admitted, noting the confusion many women experience about midlife. “Being an entrepreneur is incredibly challenging,” she added, “You have a board to answer to. It’s been a steep learning curve for me.“
