Janus Films Announces Release Date for Hlynur Pálmason’s New Film
Janus Films has officially announced that Hlynur Pálmason’s latest film, The Love That Remains, will hit theaters on January 30, 2026. Alongside this announcement, the excitement was heightened with the release of the film’s trailer.
The film offers an intimate glimpse into a year in the life of a family dealing with the complexities of separation. It skillfully interweaves moments of joy and sincerity, capturing the poignant reality of diminishing love while clinging to the memories created together through the seasons.
While the themes of The Love That Remains appear to diverge from Pálmason’s earlier works like Winter Brothers (2017), A White, White Day (2019), and the Denmark-based missionary drama Godland (2022), which was a contender at Cannes Un Certain Regard and a nominee for the 2023 Oscars representing Iceland, there is an underlying link.
Pálmason explains his approach, highlighting a desire for authenticity and spontaneity in his filmmaking. “I try not to enter a project with too many fixed ideas, aiming instead for an honest reflection of real human experiences. The themes vary widely,” he states.
He further elaborates on his current project, “This movie delves into nature, the things we construct, reconstruct, or tear down, and explores themes of unity, division, miscommunication, and conflicting emotions. But at its heart, it is a story about family, tying naturally into the themes of my previous works, whether short or feature-length.”
The film made its initial debut in the Cannes Premiere section in May in a non-competitive category and has been notable for its unique cast member, Panda the sheepdog, who clinched the Palm Dog award. It was later chosen in August as Iceland’s submission for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
Production of The Love That Remains was handled by Anton Máni Svansson from Iceland’s Still Vivid and Katrin Pors from Denmark’s Snowglobe.
The film features performances from a notable cast including Saga Garðarsdóttir, known for Woman at War, Sverrir Gudnason from Borg vs. McEnroe, Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir who appeared in Godland, and Þorgils Hlynsson and Grímur Hlynsson, both from Nest.
