James Gunn's Superman Sequel Unveiled: Exciting Lex Luthor Story Details Revealed!

New Insights into Lex Luthor’s Role in Man of Tomorrow

Recent information has come to light regarding Lex Luthor’s character development in the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow.

Nicholas Hoult has taken on the iconic role of Lex Luthor in Superman, the inaugural film of the DC Universe series, which premiered in the summer of 2025. As Superman’s archenemy, Hoult’s portrayal of Luthor was pivotal as the main antagonist orchestrating various challenges for the Man of Steel. The next installment, Man of Tomorrow, will feature Luthor in his classic green and purple battle suit. In a surprising twist, he will need to collaborate with Superman, played by David Corenswet, to combat a more formidable enemy.

In a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Nathan Fillion, who returns as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in Man of Tomorrow, shared that the film will shed more light on Luthor’s complexities beyond his animosity towards Superman and other metahumans. Fillion emphasized the importance of understanding Lex Luthor’s background, stating, “In the first movie, and rightly so, we learn a lot about who Superman is. In [Man of Tomorrow], I think we’ll learn more about who Lex Luthor is, and I think it’s equally important.”

While the first Superman film left many details of Luthor’s past unexplored, James Gunn, writer/director and co-leader of DC Studios, has since revealed intriguing aspects of Hoult’s character. For instance, in the Superman audio commentary, it was noted that Luthor was a child prodigy who attended MIT at age eight and was mentored by Sydney Happersen, a future member of his LuthorCorp team. Gunn also disclosed on social media that at age 12, Luthor inadvertently created Mister Handsome in a petri dish while attempting to clone a human, resulting in a being that now exists in Luthor’s pocket dimension.

The conclusion of Superman saw Luthor apprehended by A.R.G.U.S. and incarcerated at the VanKull Department of Corrections. His later cooperation with Rick Flag Sr. in cracking the Quantum Unfolding Chamber during the second season of Peacemaker led to the discovery of the Salvation prison dimension. It remains to be seen how this alliance might influence his role in Man of Tomorrow. Once released, Luthor will unite with Superman to battle Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger.

Man of Tomorrow will also see the return of many cast members from Superman, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Frank Grillo as Flag Sr., Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. New additions to the cast include Aaron Pierre and Xolo Maridueña, reprising their roles as Green Lantern John Stewart and Blue Beetle, respectively. Adria Arjona, Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls have been cast in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.
