The popularity of Wuthering Heights is on the rise.
The 2026 adaptation of Wuthering Heights by writer-director Emerald Fennell, based on Emily Brontë’s renowned novel, has reached a significant box office achievement. The film features Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. It opened over Valentine’s weekend and achieved a remarkable three-day domestic opening of $32.8 million, marking it as the strongest domestic opening of the year.
According to Deadline, by Sunday morning of its second weekend, Wuthering Heights is expected to accumulate a global total of $151.7 million. This sum includes $60 million from domestic revenues and an additional $91.7 million from international sales, making it the first Margot Robbie film since Barbie to surpass the $150 million global mark.
In total, only 11 films starring Margot Robbie have reached the $150 million mark, starting with 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street ($389.8 million). The most recent film before Barbie in July 2023 to achieve this was The Suicide Squad in 2021, which premiered in August and ultimately grossed $168.7 million worldwide.
This achievement notably marks a turnaround in box office performance for Robbie, following the disappointment of 2025’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. That romantic fantasy film was a box office flop, earning just $20.2 million globally against a production budget of $45 million.
Having achieved this impressive milestone within just 10 days of release, Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is poised to surpass several of Margot Robbie’s previous top-grossing films. The first target is 2021’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which earned $157.2 million and is likely to be exceeded by the end of the second full week of release for her new film.
It’s also expected to quickly overtake the earnings of The Suicide Squad and 2015’s Focus ($168.1 million), and it might eventually surpass 2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) ($205.3 million).
Even if it doesn’t climb any higher (which would require surpassing the $357.2 million generated by The Legend of Tarzan in 2016), this total would position Wuthering Heights as Margot Robbie’s seventh highest-grossing film ever.
However, it’s still uncertain whether the film will turn a profit, given that Wuthering Heights had a reported production budget of $80 million and publicity expenditures of $100 million, suggesting it needs to generate approximately $360 million to break even in theaters.
