Mike Flanagan’s New Take on Stephen King’s The Mist: How It Differs From Darabont’s Film

Mike Flanagan Teases Differences Between New Stephen King's The Mist Adaptation & Frank Darabont's Original Movie

Mike Flanagan’s reinterpretation of The Mist promises a fresh perspective, distinct from its earlier cinematic version.

Acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan has hinted at significant deviations in his upcoming production of Stephen King’s The Mist compared to Frank Darabont’s 2007 film. Flanagan’s rendition, under the banner of Warner Bros., will see him directing from a screenplay he wrote himself, based on King’s 1980 novella.

Flanagan recently revealed on Bluesky that his take on The Mist will diverge sharply from Darabont’s adaptation. He pointed out that the script differences begin from the very first page, indicating a novel approach to the story. Below are his comments:

Long ago, I learned to never predict what fans will or won’t debate (everyone should just relax; I recently saw a frenzy over some fan-made AI posters for The Exorcist)… but yes, this won’t be a simple redo. The differences begin on page 1.

I admire Darabont’s movie, but there’s no point in remaking that. That’s why I’m taking a new direction 🙂

King’s original tale centers on a group of townspeople in Brighton, Maine, who struggle to survive as monstrous creatures emerge from a mysterious mist. Darabont’s adaptation stayed largely true to this plot, focusing on the interaction between the creatures and the human survivors, though it featured a notably altered ending that even King himself praised.

A subsequent adaptation emerged as a television series on Spike, which introduced both supernatural elements and psychological horror, forcing characters to confront their personal demons. However, the series received mixed reviews and was discontinued after just one season.

As for Flanagan’s interpretation, details remain sparse. However, it’s clear from his statements that he intends to innovate from the outset, potentially infusing the story with new elements. Given Flanagan’s successful track record with King’s adaptations, his version of The Mist is highly anticipated.

The Mist is among several King projects Flanagan is currently developing. Alongside this, he is also working on a Carrie TV series for Prime Video expected to debut in October this year, as well as a television adaptation of The Dark Tower series. Beyond King’s works, Flanagan is involved in writing Clayface for the DCU and directing an upcoming Exorcist movie, set to hit theaters next year.

While it might be a while before more specifics on his version of The Mist are available, Flanagan’s initial insights suggest that his changes could offer a distinct and impactful departure from Darabont’s interpretation.
