Exclusive Preview: Jérémy Comte’s “Paradise”
Jérémy Comte is set to unveil his new cross-continental dramatic thriller, Paradise, at its world premiere during the Berlinale’s Panorama section this weekend, and we’re excited to share the first look with the trailer.
The narrative of Paradise intertwines the lives of two young individuals separated by vast distances; one navigating the urban landscape of Accra, Ghana, and the other from a quiet suburb in Quebec. Their paths converge through their mutual quest to find a lost father.
Filmed on location in Quebec and Ghana, Paradise marks Comte’s first feature-length directorial effort following his critically acclaimed short, Fauve. The short film not only received an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film but also garnered a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was named best Canadian short at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“Our goal was to create a film that takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster, encouraging them to immerse themselves in the narrative. The film is structured in three segments: the initial part introduces a mysterious puzzle, the second delves into dramatic depths, and the final part amps up the thrills, bordering on action-packed sequences. We designed it to foster a deep connection with the characters while presenting a challenging storyline,” explains Comte.
The film features performances by newcomers Joey Boivin-Desmeules and Daniel Atsu Hukporti, who play Tony and Kojo, respectively. The visual storytelling is enhanced by Olivier Gossot’s cinematography, known for his work on Fauve and Young Juliette. The production design is managed by Sylvain Lemaitre, noted for The Successor, with an evocative soundtrack by Valentin Hadjadj, known for his compositions in Close and Girl, and sound design by Sandy Notariani of The Father. The screenplay is a collaborative effort between Will Niava and Comte.
Production of the film is led by Tim Ringuette from Entract Studios Inc and Anne‑Marie Gélinas from EMA Films in Canada, alongside Fabien Westerhoff of Constellation Productions in France. The project also includes co-producers Olivier Père and Rémi Burah from Arte France Cinema.
The international sales for Paradise are being managed by Global Constellation.
